Help for a colleague - passport locked in Russian embassy!

Hi guys,

Just after any suggestions for a colleague at work who's in a bit of a bind...

He left his passport with the Russian Embassy last week for a Visa, and was told to pick it up today. Went today, to find them closed...for two days (and then on the weekend). He flies out Sunday, and they're not open until Monday. His passport is currently locked in their safe. :\

He's looking into an emergency passport...but if anyone has any suggestions I could pass on, that'd be good.

Are there any other Russian points of presence in Aus (presuming that this being an embassy, it is in CBR) - say consulate in SYD or MEL that your colleague can make contact with and explain the situation. Or perhaps they're all shut for some Russian holiday?

PS Even if there were other POP open, I suspect your colleague would not get much help/sympathy, but can't hurt to try

Unlikely that any embassy/consulate will be open.

Ask DFAT to contact the embassy, they will have an after hours contact. Failing that, contact the passports office and see he can get a new one. Failing that, change departure date.

Whoops, sorry 'bout that - meant to update this thread but forgot.

His dad went back the next day (Friday) and found there were a few Russian people at the gate - also expecting the consulate to be open (I mentioned embassy before, but meant consulate).

They were closed, but there was someone walking around the grounds. They called the guy over and explained the situation (in Russian). He went inside, grabbed someone, they explained the situation again...long story short that person went back into the embassy and came out with my colleague's passport.

He's now in Europe living it up on an extended holiday...lucky bugger!
