Hawaiian to axe BNE, leaving SYD as its sole Australian destination.

Not really a surprise, but at the same time unfortunate for Queensland travellers. Combination of factors including the Queensland Government restrictions came to play here.

To go from numerous direct options (HA, AC, VA, QF) in 2019 to only one (QF) in 2022 really has to be a big blow for Queensland. Leaving only QF and the few one-stop options (FJ, NZ, etc).

The Queensland Premier/Tourism Minister has to go and to dig into their AAIF taxpayer funded subsidy warchest if they want to draw many North American based airlines back into BNE.

I hope they rebook those with current BNE-HNL flights onto a BNE-SYD-HNL flight instead.

I'd hate to be returning via SYD on the way back from HNL on HA. Currently no late night VA flights after 8pm. Requiring either a over nighter or booking the late night QF558 on a separate ticket (and having to re-check in anyway regardless due to immigration requirements in SYD).

Turns out family members had booked some cash HA flights from BNE-HNL. They are yet to be offered an alternatives or even be notified by HA, I suspect it might be a few days before HA sends anything but one thing is for sure, HA is next to impossible to reach without a long wait on a phone call.

Sounds like another airline we all know and love...

It seems Hawaiian airlines hasn't told their own staff about the cancellation yet. After contacting the call centre they've been told the Brisbane flights are still going ahead...

I wonder if this leaves an opening for Jetstar to return to the BNE-HNL route?
Hopefully. I used the daytime HNL-BNE and it was a far better way of getting home to BNE, rather than having to transit SYD. It literally saved me at least 6 hours.

Yes, that's exactly the problem now if wanting to fly HNL-BNE on HA - it will involve an overnight in SYD.

There are some dates eg I randomly found 30 April where it's possible to connect through to the last VA flight of the evening. Doesn't work every time but at least some days won't require an overnight stay (also no idea why google flights is saying often late when the last couple of weeks it's been either early or on time).
