Has QANTAS made the biggest marketing blunder of all time?

Maybe people already do, I certainly think it would be presumptuous to think otherwise given this is a frequent flyer board, where discussion on such matters would be somewhat off topic in general.

Perhaps, but I suspect otherwise. The related thread is full of misinformed and culturally ignorant assertions of the UAE, Arabs and Islamic practices which I find ironic given how extensively traveled elite FF'ers would be.

Sorry, but don't hijack our rights struggle to arm your xenophobia and ignorance.

You dont have to leave the country to be an "elite" frequent flyer, presumptions and misinformation are easily formed regardless of the badges one wears ;)

How many of these AFF'ers claiming to be concerned for the rights of LGBTQI people all of a sudden are of this community themselves, or supported the community prior to this in our fight for equal rights, such as marriage equality in Australia? Strange that such support gathers momentum in relation to an agreement between two airlines.

Rather than get all melodramatic on these forums, how about performing some real activism and speak to your local MP about legalising gay marriage? Or join Amnesty International or Human Rights Watch and help protect the fundamental human rights of LGBTQI people in the Arab World, and other countries that face perseuction.

I believe the comments about the GLBTI community were part of general discussion regarding perceived problems that travellers may have if they visit/transit DXB, not a call to arms.

Now, back to our regular program...

I am not sure that the JSA has been a marketing blunder. True, there has been a lot of comment on this site - not all of it negative - however I do not believe that this is representative of the traveling public as a whole. The media seems to have mixed opinions on the benefits of the tie-up as well.

I guess time will tell.

Where do some of these posters get their information from ? I have been visiting and doing business in Dubai and the UAE for over 10 years now and have never had a problem with prescription meds or getting a drink. Even in Ramadan, its still possble to get a beer in your hotel, just be mindful of the local customs.

Have also visited several times with my partner (although we are not married) and have not experienced problems with hotels although our passports show different last names.

I have had far more problems in Bahrain and Qatar getting a drink and observing local laws and customs than in Dubai. If you see the way Russian tourists behave whilst in the UAE, we Aussies dont have much to worry about.

I look forward to the alliance being a QF and EK Gold FF but wonder if EK will bring its rewards programs more into line with what QF offers.

Some people may call it a beat up, other people may call it a bad call by QF. Either way. I will no longer fly QF to London or Europe. At the moment I fly in First at least twice a year. End of story. I do not need to go to this backward racist, sexist, facist, third world country. And by the way, being in transit in UAE is like being in UAE. Same laws apply. They will check your passport when you get off the plane and when you get back on and if they find stuff they don't like, they will put you in jail. Don't be fooled. This happens all the time in UAE. UAE is a male dominated dictatorship. People seem to forget this!!

*yawn, no news here, let's move on* I wasted 30 seconds reading your post, and another 30 seconds typing. Time which I will never get back.

Assurances that local laws won't be enforced aren't all that encouraging. Anyway, many people, like me, would just prefer to avoid the middle east. And just as the new alliance starts, there's an excellent chance of the next of the now fairly regular middle eastern wars, this time with Iran. It's essential that Qantas stay in Oneworld, so we have civilised alternatives like Cathay, Finnair and soon Malaysian.

Ronone69,

you must having been acting like one of those russian tourists I talked about to make the comments you have.

My business is actually with most of the UAE Police depts and I find them very professional to deal with and not on some witch hunt to inspect passports and confiscate Panadol.

And from my many experiences in Dubai, its hardly racist, sexist , facist and definitely not third world. Being in transit in Emirates new terminal 3 hardly rates as a bad experience, and I really cant remember seeing people being dragged off to prison whilst waiting in line to reboard a flight. I think you may have been reading some bad website blogs written by other nasty racists.

As a regular visitor to Europe, I find using Dubai as a hub for a variety of Euro destinations (with EK), to be extremely efficient and far better than having to go via London with QF.

Welcome to AFF, 911tphil.

It seems from your experience that you either work for justice (e.g. police, Interpol) or defence forces? And you are an Australian citizen?

It's heartening to hear your experiences, otherwise we just might all be doomed, according to some here.

I find it amazing that because QF have decided to make a major shift towards the Middle East (both with a Middle Eastern hub and a Middle Eastern airline) that all of the sudden QF is an "uncivilised" airline.

Perhaps the handle has something to do with the the Porsche 911 in the avatar than dialling 9-11 for emergency?

Whoops, my mistake (a little problem when you're viewing this site on the work computer with the images turned off!) :)

Agreed. Just got back from DXB last night flying PER-DXB-JFK-DXB-PER. EK in Y. Stayed 3 nights following on from a trip to New York and points north. First time my wife and I had been to DXB and we were careful because she takes a lot of various medications at times. So we made sure we didnt have any of the 4 pages of banned medications on the website and read up on all the "rules" about not showing affection in public, not taking photos of people without permission, not wearing shorts, not exposing the shoulders, etc, etc...

We chose EK before the announcement due to cost and joined skywards. Having flown them I've got to say they beat QF for quality at least in Y, but then so do SQ, CX, and just about every other flag carrier. And they had perfectly adequate wines available with the meals so definitely not a 'dry' airline.

As to staying in DXB, our hotel had plenty of booze in the minibar, not cheap but available. There were also a couple of 'winebars' in the shopping centres we visited. The pharmacies had most stuff. You could tell tourists from Expats because the expats dressed a bit more respectfully and some tourists obviously hadnt been told anything or werent aware they were breaking the rules, which did draw some disapproving stares from the locals and was quite conspicuous, but was mostly ignored.

Overall I'd say there was nothing really worth worrying about. Apart from the heat, which was oppressive when not in airconditioning. And the sand everywhere, no grass anywhere. And the 30 degree fog on our departure morning that delayed all the flights and meant a 15 minute bus ride to the plane. But that worked in our favour because there were 170 connections that couldnt land so the plane was half empty instead of chock-a-block full.

Might be a bit different out of the tourist traps, but again nothing new there if you travel in SE Asia or anywhere similar.

It seems from your handle

Could also be a Porsche driver... Although avatar looks more like a 356, than a 911... but all those pictures are a bit small for my old eyes :p

PS - Welcome :)

EDIT - of course simongr beat me to it, and 4 more posts since then... gees, I am getting too old and slow for this internet business :oops:

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Jock28, why don't you ask someone with an Israeli stamp in his / her passport or someone travelling on an Israeli passport about travelling through the UAE. The UAE is NOT a normal country. It is an Islamist dictatorship - even Sex in the City 2 showed you that. And why don't you ask the thousands of Filipino and Chinese who are slave labour workers in the UAE ? Why don't you ask other ex-pats who lose their jobs and are thrown in jail because they owe a UAE landlord $100 ? Australians desperately need a reality check about the UAE and so does QF. It is not a western country. It does not have western laws or values. It is a backwater dressed up to look like a modern society.

anatOl,
thanks for the welcome. Havent posted much but read many of the posts. I spend a lot more time on other (unrelated) forums but AFF has yielded a few pearls of wisdom I have benefited form.

Cant really say much about what I do, and I do agree that QF has somehow become tainted by daring to entertain business with an ME-based company. They are hardly camel jockeys living in a desert these days ! If you actaully spend some time there. read their papers and watch their TV, do business with them, embrace their cultures, you get the other side of the story from a ME perspective. Believe it or not, they are not all running about with bombs strapped to their chest.

And Simon, the avatar and handle do have an association - actually from another forum. But the 911 does have a police associaton as well.

Interesting enough, the last press conference by AJ seems to suggest a very large majority of people surveyed seem to like this link up with Emirates idea.

That said, of course those against will always have a greater voice and weight than those in favour. (Plus all the usual caveats with surveys, audiences etc. etc. so grain of salt here....)

<insert other arguments in thread here>

Out of curiosity - who is the dictator in the UAE???
Would that be the President, the Prime Minister or the Sheik that leads the Dubai royal family (who is also the Prime Minister of the UAE IIRC) ?

The UAE is ruled by seven of families with an appointed (by the royal families that rule each Emirate) President and Prime Minister. Each Emirate has it's own laws and they can vary significantly from the laws of the other Emirates. While it is a long way from a democracy, I really don't think it qualifies as a dictatorship either!

Unlike the terrible dictatorship that stamped my first passport "Not valid for North Vietnam"
