Has anyone visited Gansu province?

I'm looking at visiting Gansu next year and I'd love to hear from anyone who has done a self drive tour, or used a private or group tour, or used the high speed rail.

Thinking about travelling something like this itinerary.

Well to answer your question. Yes visited there about 15 years ago, but can't help you!

It was a due diligence visit to inspect some corn seed production facilities for a JV we were entering into, so all arranged via local contacts and chaperoned around, so not so much tourism. Flew into Jiayuguan and went by car to Zhangye, a 3 hr drive. The scenery (mountains) in the distance was quite impressive and wished I had time to take a detour to visit them, but alas it was a tight schedule and then went to Shenyang and Chengde.

Little anecdote, staff at hotel didn't speak any English. Got a call on hotel phone at 10pm in Chinese and didn't understand a word, just said English, they hung up. 10 mins later, they'd found someone who spoke English to call me back offering me a girl for the evening. No thank you. Amazing how easy it is to find someone speaking English when there is commerce at stake!
