As the header states, has anyone heard of a site called The Mileage Club? Just saw an add and you can buy cheap miles for selected airlines, and they also give you 1000 miles for free just by logging in with your FB account. But the question is, is it safe? Anyone had experience with them or used them to get extra points? At the rate 1,8c per mile for SiA it is really tempting :D

Not directly, but Mr Google will soon provide you with info such as:

Hi Simon,As with similar sites, you must approach with caution. With that said, the Mileage Club has a great track record. The miles are posted within minutes of submitting payment. Great customer service. They are completely upfront about how unethical the scheme is. Yet, when you can save thousands of dollars on first class flights, its something to weigh and consider especially if mileage credit isn't a priority for you on the flights in question. There is always the chance that your account can get audited and bookings cancelled thereafter. However, I don't see the likelihood of this happening if your mileage transfers are on a reasonable scale for personal use. I would be cautious if I were transferring 1 million+ miles in short amounts of time though. Also worth noting are the mileage transfer times. A good rule of thumb is that miles transfer instantly for the Western airlines but take a few days for the Asian airlines. Here is one experience from a colleague of mine. He used the mileage club by purchasing 90K ANA miles. The miles were transferred in 48 hours and then he booked a partner award return ticket on Etihad in business class from Abu Dhabi to New York. The savings were incredible. I hope this helps!
But the question is, is it safe?

Probaby less safe than buying an iPad at your local pub as whenenver you get points transferred from someone else there is a permanent electronic record trail for the airline to follow if it has a mind too. And even if you are cicrumspect in how many, and how often, you buy points, the actaull person selling may not be (not the third party reseller, but the person who actually supplies the points) and that may lead to you.

There have been some recent posts on AFF and Ozbargains recently about airlines cracking down on "bought" points, cancelled accounts, forfeitted points and flights etc.

Reportedly different airlines are more likely to take a dim view than others.

...take advantage before it gets pulled :)

The site does seem to have been around for some years now.

( not necessarily applying to this, but to mistake fares, poorly thought-out bonus point T&Cs etc)

I would regard these as less risky as you are not going to be banned for buying a mistake fare, or for exploiting a promo as long as you stick within the T&C.

I would stay away from this. If they are brokering miles from one party to another, the chances your account could get audited are not insignificant.

You potentially lose everything. This audit can happen at any time - even after you have commenced travel (for example, you might already have flown Australia to Europe, and then find you can't get home).

There are plenty of miles buying schemes where you can get legitimate miles - including American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Avianca Lifemiles, United Airlines.

And worse if they are transferring stolen miles by cracking peoples accounts

I got to thinking about this and, I wonder if they are not some type of credit company, who buys points like the credit card companies do and then resells. I can not imagine they are selling stolen points. I'm still waiting to see if they hit my Kris account.

Well their FAQ says:
- Is it legal to buy miles from sources other than the airlines?
Yes. However, in the interest of full disclosure, it is against airline policy.

They're not stolen - they are from willing sellers, to willing buyers. The company is a broker.

However, the selling or bartering of miles is usually against an airline's FF program T&Cs. This allows the airline to audit and close your account, with the loss of all miles, should they take an interest.

Standing by Wayne Bourke with interest ......
What happens to him shouldn't be the trigger for people rushing out taking risks. If he succeeds the next person may fail.

Oh and I think it wouldn't be fun to book a holiday and find your award flights and account closed a few days before flying. No amount of arguing or complaints is going to fix that up.

I in no way suggest any one follows me, I'm just doing this to see if it works. if it is successful then great, if not I am out 2k, no big deal. As for the company if this is a trap then they have been doing it a long time.

I believe we all need to be careful, however if you look at a lot of things that the airlines do, they border on illegal.

so please do not follow me.
