Has anyone had success with the call-up "Marginal" xASA's?

Re: MASA post June 2013

This is not incorrect, and is not reflected in my experience: asked to book an available classic award (I had identified online) as an ASA paying the taxes and charges on CC.

All this shows is the continued variability amongst agents in their knowledge of booking ASA's at classic award prices.

I think we need to resign ourselves to the inevitable - great value ASA's will effectively be dead and buried. The ongoing telephone sagas are merely a symptom of this.

I for one have moved on.

Yep, I have moved on too, my QF points earn is now 10% of my SQ points earn... (from zero KrisFlyer last year)

Re: MASA post June 2013

This is fundamentally incorrect as the award type you are booking is an Any Seat Award. This award is different to a Classic Award, so when you call up saying you want to book a 'Classic Award as an Any Seat Award' you are making things difficult for yourself. The T&Cs don't mention classic, so why would you mention a different fare type? YMMV, but for me, 4 out of 4 CSRs in the past 2 days correctly identified the fare type and award type. Maybe I'm just lucky

As someone way smarter than me once said "The plural of anecdote isn't evidence"
I was simply pointing out that I used a similar method to the OP and was successful.
In your case "4/4 CSRs correctly identified the award type" and IME 1/1 agents booked me in P class at classic award rates.
The end result is the same.

Re: First Ever Status Run !!

You can add my MEL-xSYD-ASP to this.

Other "exceptions" from this thread:

#146 HKG-MEL-BNE-CNS in J for 50,000 points + cash

#375 ADL-BNE-TSV-BNE-ADL for 48,000 points plus $363

#392 ADL-PER-KGI for 25,000 points plus $192

#604 60,000 as the min for a trip to BKK where classic cost was 72,000

#686
TSV-BNE-DRW JASA return for April next year and the all point cost came to 91,173points, inclusive of taxes and surcharges. The classic award cost is 100,000 plus a co payment of $173.49...

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

1st call - asked for an ASA - oh you can do that on line - "No I can't" - Yes you can - made her walk me through it online and explained she needs to learn her product as points plus pay is not ASA!!! - really I was at work and had the time so education is the key

2nd call - asked for an ASA into U fare bucket - didn't have a clue - gave her Right on Q - number 7740 - and told her to go read. Call started at 2.21pm - located the instructions and got my flight details at 2.23pm and have been on hold since (currently 2.35pm)

All good if you are the owner of our business. Not so flash if someone else is paying you to educate and train QF staff

Re: MASA post June 2013

Hope you don't mind my asking, what was the eventual cost compared to that first offered?
After trying one or two combinations of points and cash I settled on 65,000 points and $260 ish. (Classic in J is 60k and maybe $30 cheaper??). I think she said all inclusive with points was roughly 100k.

Just had no issues getting a booking for TSV-DRW, FWIW drops down to 48000 and $387.50, by comparison June 2011 saw the same trip much cheaper:

..... so you have gone from 65,000 + $5K to 65,000 + ~$260 :!:
This is nightmare territory. Just amazing.
Glad to hear you had the perfect outcome at the end.

Re: MASA post June 2013

Okkkk, Double status credits have led me to this :p.

Rang up Qantas on the 1300 number, got through straight away to platinum desk, lady on phone knew exactly what I was talking when I used the term "Marginal Any Seat Award" we went through an intial option I was looking at BNE-MEL-PER-KTA, KTA-PER-SYD-HBA. Unfortunately the Mel leg had an overnight stopover and thus she started to attempt to book those as two separate legs as the system wouldn't allow her to book it together so I instead costed the BNE-SYD-PER-KTA, KTA-PER-SYD-HBA with 05:00 BNE departure. After some fiddling, she had some trouble finding the flights I wanted as it kept trying to suggest the more direct flights first. Eventually got through to pricing and it came to 135110 points I asked her if she could move it down to 72,000 points and came back with and $590.43.

I then asked her if it was possible to find out what each leg costed but she said this wasn't possible so I asked if she was able to save that and try another routing, she came back with she couldn't and had to erase the current, but she was happy to look at as many options as I wanted provided I had the time to do so. So we erased that and tried the second routing I had prepared earlier which was HBA-MEL-PER-KTA, KTA-PER-SYD-HBA. This one came out to 135082 points or 72,000 and $590. I'd saved my self 28 points! Anyway I ummed and ahhhed about it for a bit thinking which route I would prefer and ended up coming back for HBA return mainly because of two A330 services instead of the 767.

Then came the last question do I want to use all points or use cash. This was difficult cause I also expected the cash to bit lower I was thinking around the $450 mark. I ended up deciding the hassle of the booking and still getting roughly $1 to 1000 points I'll just book all points. plus I have another 150,000 points in the bank.

Anyway so with double status credit should get 760 status credits 16,062 points due to platinum and cabin bonus. all being one and a half loyalty bonuses get at least 8,000 on top of that back also.

Overall the experience was a little painful, I didn't like the idea of having to go through every option with the person and if I was available online I would of checked a lot more options. Found it quite frustrating not know what the points were going to be till the end also and not being able to compare the different flight options.

Also she did state at a couple of points the classic is generally much cheaper but didn't really push it, for what I ended up with the Classic was a total of 126,000 all inclusive or 100,000 and $213.88. So 135082 - 16062 points - 8000 loyalty bonus = 111020 points net. Way I look at it, I've spent 15,000 less points and received 760 status credits.

Success booking JASA for SYD-BNE-TSV return - 48,000 points + $356 (incl. $7 AMEX charge).

I did not ring the 1300 number. I rang the number on the back of the WP card. Asked if the gentleman could put me through to someone who might be able to help me out which was met with "No worries. I can help with that!"

Very friendly; I was well impressed. I much prefer the phone service save for not being able to price it up online first.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

What an interesting thread this has been. I wanted to ask a question.. People say that you need to check that there is a classic award seat available then call up to try to get them to book ASA as U fare. My question is, can you ring up as a WP and ask for a J award to be opened up and then ask for the ASA in U ? I don't even know if the premise of being able to ask for an award seat be it Y Y+, J to be released is correct but I have read people say that they can/they have. I want to go BNE to. LAX or BNE SYDNEY DFW. On 25/10/13 and returnLAX BNE around 15/11. I can see Y award seats but nothing else. I'm actually about 30k points short for J class return x3 but thought I may be able to do y+ for one leg or buy one J ticket one way.

Is this even possible or am I way off base? Thanks

Anecdotally, no this is not possible.

Thanks opusman. What about the first part, just ringing up and asking for a classic awards to be released? Is that a WP benefit?

Yes it is. It's not guaranteed of course, depends on yield management.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Just made my first MASA..... SYD > MEL in J for next month..... Got through to the Lovely Carol in Brisbane who was well & truly onto this & my reservation was all confirmed within 7 minutes...... extremely Impressed. Carol knew exactly how to complete these type's of bookings perfectly.

Certainly the booking process was over & beyond my expectations. Well done Qantas.

It can be done apparently. The car food and taco man (of course) has reported success doing this :)

He must have got lucky, IME no chance of a WP request for a JASA or FASA

EDITED:
Misread the OP
You can of course request a Classic Award release seat

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Just now successfully booked MASA Sydney-Brisbane-Townsville return in J. $349 + 48K points for this Saturday. (DSC = 400SC thank you very much).

As soon as I said "Any Seat Award booked into U fare class" Essie knew exactly what I was after. Followed up with "minimum points/maximum cash co-payment" and I was done in less than 4 minutes. Props to my peeps in this forum thread (and Essie) :)

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Many thanks for all the advice in this thread. Today I was able to book (Canberra to Sydney to Hobart) and (Townsville to Brisbane to Darwin) for the prices stated above with no problem at all. I never actually booked a JASA before June, but I was happy enough with today's two phone calls.

A lot of information to digest, but very helpful.

Glad you made it, and welcome to AFF. Lots more to digest...

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

When you are successful in having a ASA booked into U Fare know this means u get SC & points, does it also mean that it becomes eligible to upgrade?
