A shocking accident: Ground worker sucked into engine

In a shocking accident, an Air India service engineer has been killed after he was sucked into the live engine of an A-319 aircraft at Mumbai airport on Wednesday evening, according to the Times of India newspaper. The engineer, identified as Ravi Subramanium, was in his 40s. At the time of the newspaper's going to the press, the body was yet to be recovered from the engine.

The incident took place about 8.30pm when the aircraft for the Mumbai-Hyderabad AI flight 619 was being pushed back from the parking bay before take off. Hours later, his body was still being extracted from the engine.

I must admit I'm surprised that the ingress of air would be that powerful during push back; I guess details will emerge in due course

Terribly sad accident. The APU on the aircraft was unserviceable, so during engine start, the engine already running needs to operate at a higher thrust to assist starting the remaining engine.

A cross bleed start requires a bit more power than idle, but it shouldn't be enough to cause this sort of accident. More to this tale....

The video involves a USN A6, but gives you an idea.... And, before you're too shocked, he survived. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GF3Iz7b95-8
