Growth of Chinese Tourist....

Well 4 Chinese tourists thought us Australians were friendly today.I was walking towards them, flies were bad so I did the Aussie wave. They all waved back and gave me big smiles as they walked past.

I've no desire to go back to Communist China, but I also have no desire to go to places frequented by large groups from any country, be it Australians, Americans, Chinese, nor anyone else, well maybe except Canadians because they are just so damn nice.

Sure, people in Communist China may be very welcoming and friendly but this imho is the exact opposite of their ruling Communist power.

Island building in oceans for military bases, treatment of Tibetans, Uyghurs and other minorities, trade in endangered species for their so called traditional medical benefits and things like this for example:

I've spoken to Tibetans about their treatment since the Communist Chinese invasion in the fifties and the migration of Han Chinese to Tibet, also their behaviour in neighbouring countries like Laos, but anyway, we at least we are free to express our opinion (within reason) without worrying if our actions are being monitored by Communists nor the possibility that our relatives may be punished for me expressing an opinion critical of the ruling Communist party.

There goes my chance of getting a Chinese visa. :)

Best we don’t turn this into a Chinese bashing thread - FTR nobody has spent more time visiting China in last 20 years than I have - as a general population they are the loveliest gentle people - so they have some different customs - get used to it and get over it - welcome them with open arms - they do that to us Australians when we visit China.

Don’t like selfie sticks? Get a life!

Could not agree more. An incredible country with incredible people.

I would say that I'm surprised by the direction this thread has gone, but I'm not since this is not the first thread to go into racist territory. It surprises me that this happens as I would have thought that a group of so frequently traveled people would have a better tolerance for people acting outside our own western views.

Now as for "badly behaving Chinese", yes you remember the few who were rear end holes. Did you notice the other 10 who were as well behaved as any other tourist? Probably not, because our brain switches off when we see normal behavior.

How did you know that the person who was badly behaving was even Chinese? Race blindness is a known thing, for some reason our brain can process more intricate details in faces of the same race as our own, therefore the stereotype of all Asians look the same is somewhat a thing (provided you yourself are not Asian), so that person who you think is Chinese may never have even stepped foot in China.

Finally you're (and I'm talking the general "you're", not directed at any particular person) are complaining that other people want to see the same tourist attractions which you yourself flew halfway around the world to see as well? The mind boggles at the arrogance that the worlds tourist attractions are there for your eyes and enjoyment only.

I started the thread as the article had some interesting numbers on quite a few different topics - travel, passports, airports, spending .... was surprised Australia ranked so high in the OS spending stats, and the UK absolutely spanked us on the issued passport percentage - maybe a result of many dual citizens having a lazy passport in the undies draw :p

You never know where a thread will go..... but Chinese bashing was not the objective.

FTR - I enjoy visiting China for work or leisure..... I would encourage people to visit.

I find the number of airports proposed to be most fascinating.

It's taken us how long to get Badgerys Creek to be opening in just 6 more years? Heck we can't even open a new runway at an existing busy airport without years of studies, assessments, hearings, challenges etc.

I often threaten hubby that we will one day join a asian tour group - when I see them in the wild, they always seem to be having a great time/getting the most out of their trip.

For the OP, only 9% of Chinese people have a passport - can you imagine tourism when the numbers double, triple.

The nature of Chinese tourists will change over time. Currently you have big numbers of people who have suddenly become “wealthy” or at the the very least “less poor” but only know the ways of what they were as poor. As the newer, more confident, generation emerges, there will be a difference.

I struggle to tolerate big (organised) groups of tourists together, irrespective of race. They seem to take over and ignore everything and everyone around them. I’ve seen this with Chinese, Americans, Australians, Brits, various Europeans, Russians, Koreans and Japanese. Get the same number of individual travellers in the same space and it all seems to work so much better. People are more focussed on the experience than what their guide has to say and where they’re being told to go.

I thought I plainly stated that I didn't like large groups of any nationality and will try to avoid them if at all possible, as stated above some of these tour groups overwhelm a place without consideration of other tourists or the locals, obviously I needed to express it better.

I don't tend to go to places that attract huge number of tourists, Krakow for example, we were going to visit last month, but after reading a little bit and talking to some Polish people we meet, we decided to avoid it and visit other less well known places.

Some friends were in Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic last month, I told them to stay there at least 2 nights and they were appreciative of this given that they basically had the place to themselves after the tour buses left. They however loved Prague, even given the number of tourists.

I guess I'm lucky in that I've had the opportunity to visit a lot of places that are very popular now, years ago, but I also now travel for different reasons as well, and I'm not going to a place just because it's the 'in' thing to do, or because others have been there.

Same reason I'm not keen on cruises, although I know a lot on here are, not much different to avoiding all the in places that young Australians had to visit in the seventies and eighties, Pamplona, Octoberfest and the like, so many them seemed to think that they had to become some sort of Barry McKenzie caricature when they left here. I'm sure others could give many examples.

Other races/religions have, imo, been treated far more harshly on this forum besides the Chinese, but as course ymmv.

Just because I dislike their government, doesn't mean I dislike them individually, another link of the Communist Chinese government behaving badly.

Off topic, imo we are no better in that we deal with governments that have atrocious human rights records because we can't afford to damage our trade links with them. This however is probably for another time and place.

Wait till the Indians start travelling in great numbers.

I see lots of Indians on my travels already (and not just in India :p) just not in big groups with a flag waving tour guide. Generally in smaller groups, or bigger groups traveling independently - often as families.

I asked an Indian colleague (from India) why you don't see so many big Indian tour groups - I asked if it was that many affluent Indians speak some English. He just laughed and said something to the effect of "No, can you imagine trying to keep a group of us together, when everyone wants to do their own thing?". :)
