Group bookings and FFP

Hello guys, Im new here and have a few questions which you might be able to help me with.

I am getting married in July 2011 :shock: In Greece and I am looking about flying over about 15/20 family members from Sydney and Melbourne to Santorini Greece.

I am looking at making a group booking and Im not sure how the frequent flyer points system works on group bookings.

Am I entitled to the points for the15/20 flights I am going to pay for?
If so, is there a credit card that earns points for the Star Alliance?

Any suggestions on what is the best way to maximise any frequent flyer points?

I can't speak for every airline, but for most they only allow the passenger flying on the ticket (person A, person B, person C...) to collect the FF points.

You might be able to work with your guests and get them to transfer the points back to you after the flights, though I'm sure there are other gifts you'd appreciate more

There might also be a problem earning any points on a group 'discounted' booking. You'd have to enquire with the airline (or here when you have a shortlist).

As for the credit card, not sure which would be best but you'd certainly be able to keep all the points from that.

The airlines we are looking at are as follows:

Emirates, Singapore, Thai and Etihad.

There are two ways to earn FF points for such points.

• Flying - each passenger flying gets the points in their own personal FF account
• Credit Card spending - the personal paying the bill get the credit card points in their account

A couple of people I work with had to do the same although ex DRW & the wedding was in Kalymnos.

Both lots of people bought JQ cheapies for AUD99.00 each way DRW/SIN/DRW on JQ website then one of them bought a ticket on EK SIN/DXB/ATH/DXB/SIN which was about AUD1100.00 but it could've been cheaper around.AUD850.00 if he had longer transits in Dubai (DXB). This was booked via the EK website.

The second group bought tickets direct with TG SIN/BKK/ATH/BKK/SIN which I believe was around AUD1100.00 return. They were visiting SIN a few months before & saw the TG ticket office in SIN who had the deal.

Given the size of the group involved I'd be a bit nervous about connecting the same day when you have two separate tickets so it might be a good idea to overnight in SIN then fly all the way through on the return sector.

See link below for details on who JQ have interline baggage agreements with if you were travelling straight through not stopping over. Emirates (EK) & Etihad (EY) do but Singapore (SQ) & Thai (TG) dont. If you happen to be at MEL Airport in the near future ask JQ at the Intl Terminal if they still through check to these airlines - forget calling JQ, go direct to the people who would be checking you in at the airport.

Having said that if you were flying eg JQ MEL/SIN then SQ SIN/ATH having to collect your bags and then recheck isn't too bad in SIN according to the post below. In fact in may be more convenient doing this than having a transit in the Middle East.

Qatar would be another option ex-MEL (MEL-DOH-ATH-JTR) that might be worth looking at.
