Griswold’s Road Trip

On the New York for the final stop of the trip. Stopped off for lunch at Farmer and the Cow in Wilmington, Delaware. Shared the Farmer and the Bao burger with Ellen (not on a Bao more about the filling) and it was delicious with a nice amount of spice.

After some discussion the plan was to drop the rest of the Griswold’s off with the luggage in midtown manhattan and then drop the car back to JFK, with Clark going solo for that part and returning on the train.

So that’s what happened, when we go to the hotel the loading zone out the front was choked with buses however miraculously a park appeared about ten metres after just as we were preparing to double park. Bags dropped off and checked in and then Clark was off on his first and likely last time driving through Manhattan.

Traffic was pretty heavy on the way, with the trip taking about 40 minutes more than normal according to what I had looked at before. Car topped up with fuel, returned without trouble at JFK and then airtrain / Long Island rail road back to Penn Station which is a couple of blocks from the hotel.

Walked past Madison Square Garden from Penn where we will be taking in a Knicks game before joining the Griswold’s at the hotel as they were finishing up their dinners.

4736 miles driven according to the receipt from Avis.

A night at the Knicks who unfortunately lost to the Suns. On the plus side both Audrey’s made it through the entire game which is a new experience for nighttime sport, with only Audrey Jnr losing interest in the last five minutes. That and she didn’t get any tshirts from the tshirt cannons. She did appear on the giant screen at one stage so there is no pleasing some people!

Kids might like Roosevelt Island cablecar, its a bit of a fun ride as well as movie cred, from the Spiderman movie, Spidey had to hold the cars up in the battle with green Goblin.
Also Ghostbusters firehouse, Seinfeld, Gossip Girl, Men in Black, Home Alone, Superman, Friends and many other movie locations. Not exciting but you can see them.

After the Guggenheim there was no chance of convincing the kids to pop in here. They decided it would more fun to feed the birds and play with the snow in the park. Fair enough, while they were doing that it was interesting reading the dedications on the benches.

Did you hear me sigh about the snow from Adelaide where it was nearly 30 before 9am.

Personally I would have taken them to the met instead of the Guggenheim but that's just me

I thought I heard a faint whisper….

I know what you are saying, I really don’t get a lot of modern art but it I do like interesting buildings and it was more about the architecture.

That being said I found it (as did Ellen) quite off putting inside, the wall on the internal side was quite low and with the angled floor it felt like you were always going to topple over the edge. Maybe that was the design.

Oh yeah and the toilets. Not enough for the numbers and it’s like they deliberately placed them in a position in the building that makes them a weird layout. Anyways…..

Whilst the Guggenheim is an interesting building, Id vote for the Met every time. The Met not only has an incredible Art collection (Van Gogh, Renoir, Degas), kids genuinely seem t love walking through the Egyptian temple and roof top sculpture garden over looking central park (skip the coin collection).
