Good Y seat vs PE

Sitting in PE exit row upper deck of Qantas A380 last week the cabin crew told the guy next to me on the window to put his shoes on , wasnt allowed to have his sneakers next to his seat (under his feet), given reasoning of in case of emergency, so i cant imagine a suitcase or inflatable foot rest would be ok, if shoes are problematic.

This was during cruise? Or taxi/takeoff/landing?

Not being allowed to take off shoes for the entire flight would be a new reason to 100% avoid flying QF :(

It was just before the second meal service so about 1-1.5 hours out from arrival. But he was a nervous flyer and kept getting out of his seat for tim tams, so may ethey were juat annoyed at him.

On a day flight i have no issue keeping my shoes on. In exit row of Y never been told to keep shoes on.

Which QF flight was this on? Is it a requirement of being on an exit row to keep shoes on?

It is not a requirement to keep shoes on once onboard.

All passenger except infants must board with shoes on however. Cannot board barefoot or in socks.

No the issue is (as it happened to me too) that you can’t have your shoes on the floor next to you - you can put them overhead or wear them. That said, after my shoe instructions, i used my backpack as a footrest all the way from SIN to LHR and no one said anything.

Anyway, getting back to the OP, unless you have an upgradable fare, you can’t upgrade to PE anyway. I’d got PE just for the extra space and I don’t like to gamble on empty Y space further than 5 or 6 hours flying

I'm struggling to see any safety support for this 'rule'. In an emergency you'd probably want to have your shoes within easy reach rather than have to stand up to retrieve them. Unless the concern is shoes flying around during sudden and severe turbulence? But that too seems far fetched.

Surely there's no such thing as a good Y seat?

Probably true, but I think I've been pretty spoiled when it comes to PE. Jal was really good, as was VA, and I'm just worried that I'd be let down by Qantas, especially on the refurb. If I went Y, at least I'd be expecting to be uncomfortable and disappointed, if that makes sense?!

QF's PE is pretty much same same as QF's domestic business class. If you could sit happily in a 737 business class for 14 hours you'll have a pretty good idea of what it's like. (And outside of meal times it's same same as economy, but with a fraction more space.)
