Amused by the change to Seat Selection when you move from Gold to Platinum.
Here is my choice on Friday while I was still Gold:

Here is my choice for same flight this morning having made Platinum on Saturday:

When you checked on Friday, I assume it was more than 80 hours from departure? More seats would have opened up on Saturday if you checked again even with gold status - albeit not to the same extent as a platinum member.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I thought being WP you could choose an available seat in any row except rows 4 & 5, if it is plane with 3 rows of Business class, and once T80 happens, anyone can seat what seats are available?

Stand to be corrected...

At T80 every seat is open to everyone, not just WP's...

That is not the experience that I had when recently trying to assist 2 colleagues (NB and PS) with their seat selections.

At T-80, Mr PS was able to select up to about row 9.

At T-80, Mr NB was only able to select up to about row 16, except for one flight where his booking was linked to mine where he was able to select up to row 6 (but not row 4 or 5).

Maybe it depends how heavily loaded the flight is?

It might relate to loadings, I'm not sure. But as a PS I have had row 4.. 6, 7, 8, 9.

Getting row 4 was by checking at exactly T80 which was at 02:40 and I happened to be up.

I'll be SG 3 months into my year and WP before its up for renewal so all irrelevant to me anyway. 1 more domestic flight as a PS! :)

There's a process of checking and re-checking and moving up closer and closer to the front with each time you log in. It's certainly time consuming, but depends where you want to sit...

I don't know how the rest of the WP crowd feel but being WP is the new Gold and thus you end up chasing seats at T80 just like everyone else!

True.

Flying to Singapore next week and some seats are blocked (free on expert flyer) so I have to wait until t-80 for them to open.

Flying to Sydney from Manila the following week yet I am able to select seat 23 as of now. There is no rhyme nor reason to it.

As a WP I'd be ringing to request one of those blocked seats before T-80.

Indeed, as a Plat I thought I'd be able to access rows 4/5 on a 738 but nope :(

My understanding was that it was only at T-24 that all seats opened up. Also I upgraded to J on one flight and gave up row 4 - when I asked if my colleague could move to it from row 19 I was told that the seats had to be held for SG and above - this was at the QP.

I have heard this a lot but I don't feel the same - sure there is some chasing to do but generally got third row at worst when still WP. Still get access to DOM J and Int'l F lounges that SG don't get ;)

I tried that, was told they are reserved for P1 and CL. Try calling us on the day your flying she said...

Strange that - my understanding was that there are no blocked seats on int'l flights - as a WP I was able to get row 4 SYD-WLG.

Indeed, as a Plat I thought I'd be able to access rows 4/5 on a 738 but nope :(

That has not been the case for a long time - even before P1 came in row 4/5 was blocked for CL I think. Pre P1 I still had to chase at T-80 but had more success than after they introduced P1...

Like I said, I've had Row 4 at T80. Could be an error, I have only had that type of selection 4 or 5 times @ T80.

From memory, pre-P1, I usually had little trouble with row 4 on a 737 as a WP. Since P1, no issue.

Funnily, as a WP I was always allocated row 2 or 3 in J, but never 1. As a P1, sometimes row 1 in J, but not a lot. A bit odd, as when I log in check seat selection, there's never a problem moving to row 1 - it's just that the system does not allocate me a seat there (even with a fwd preference in my profile) - odd...

Interesting.

Just to be clear, that seat map was for a flight this coming Friday Saturday, more than 120 hours before the flight then and indeed, as I post, it is still at least 92 hours before that flight.

Just as an example of what I as a WP normally see, here are some seat maps for some of the flights I have as a WP in January:
