Not personally but have known plenty who have.
Mostly infrequent travellers going to the football in Melbourne. Especially years ago when there was always these cheap Adelaide to Melbourne fares offered

Unlike WSI, AVV is further from the population centre of Melbourne than MEL. It should really be called Geelong airport. Great for people living in Geelong

At the moment, it's about 20-25 mins extra driving to central Melbourne from AVV compared to MEL and and extra $20-25 for the Uber. (I'm seeing $59 for MEL-CBD and $81 for AVV-CBD).

I haven’t been there for years but do they now have any other transportation options such as buses?

They do have a bus service.

Also I have never heard of anyone rocking up to that airport by accident.

Skybus to Southern X and local bus to Lara Station to connect to V/Line trains.
