Not personally but have known plenty who have.
Mostly infrequent travellers going to the football in Melbourne. Especially years ago when there was always these cheap Adelaide to Melbourne fares offered

Unlike WSI, AVV is further from the population centre of Melbourne than MEL. It should really be called Geelong airport. Great for people living in Geelong

At the moment, it's about 20-25 mins extra driving to central Melbourne from AVV compared to MEL and and extra $20-25 for the Uber. (I'm seeing $59 for MEL-CBD and $81 for AVV-CBD).

I haven’t been there for years but do they now have any other transportation options such as buses?

They do have a bus service.

Also I have never heard of anyone rocking up to that airport by accident.

Skybus to Southern X and local bus to Lara Station to connect to V/Line trains.

I went to AVV in the late eighties to do circuits in a 747, no mistake, until the crosswind got up.

I live South of Mordialloc, so AVV is across the bay.

Using public transport it takes me up to two hours to get to MEL with frequent services. AVV is problematic in that respect.

I have a friend who, while they fly little, refuses to fly Jetstar when they do.

About 15 year ago, they had a day return trip from MEL to SYD on Jetstar. Arrived in SYD ok, but when back at the airport for their return home, found their flight had been cancelled and they were put on a slightly later flight back to Melbourne.

It was only when they landed they realised it was actually AVV.

Shame about their car parked at MEL.

Although with the new Bus 18, you can get from Mordialloc station to Avalon Airport via Southern X & Geelong train in about 2 1/4 hrs, so it's probably about 30-40 mins longer (and the Vline train more comfortable if you can get a seat). But a shorter walk to the terminal

But agree with earlier post, it's really should be Geelong (Avalon) airport. Even the Bus 18 is optimised for connections to/.from Geelong, less so for Melbourne.

Anyone else remember the TV show that followed Jetstar back in the day?

Going Places. It aired in 2007.

There were a few instances on that show where people rocked up to Tulla but had flights booked from Avalon.

The episodes used to be on YouTube but are long gone.

Many years ago I recall checking in at the desk for a JQ flight at MEL and the pair of, young Asian females, I guess tourists, at the adjacent counter were trying to check in for their JQ flight also. Except their flight left from AVV. The JQ staff member at check in was trying to explain to them that they were at the wrong airport.

Guess they were screwed over because there was no way they would have made their flight timing at AVV.

Driver (ok dude we met) took us to Butterworth RAAF base - as we were Australian
Oops!
Frantic 30+ minute dash with said dude to the international airport.
Thai held the plane and albeit us in the back row of economy, a great flight!
Wouldn't happen today

Perhaps they should stop wording it Melbourne (Avalon). Ryanair do the same with many secondary airports that are 100km away.

Would have been a quicker trip in the mirage’s ex butterworth, in flight service was average though and don’t mention luggage space…
