Go rounds at Sydney today (High Winds) Aug 10

Bumped into Oz_Mark in the MEL DJ lounge this evening. We were off to our hotel room and he was still waiting for a SYD flight.

I hope it is better in the morning as we have a 0730 flight to SYD.

I hope it is better on Sunday when we're going up there for lunch. I really don't fancy eating a lovely lunch and then surrendering it to the waves whilst on the ferry.

I wouldn't feel too manly if that happened.

i was in St. Peters today visiting someone, and it was very scary watching the planes land this afternoon. even then driving back to the suburbs of the inner west, i spent more time watching the sky than i did the roads, and the roads were scary enough with debris everywhere.

The Air Pacific jumbo that went around just landed but the wheels were on the tarmac at least half way down the runway!!!!!!!!! Must have been fun to be on board for the landing!

Yes, it was interesting! There was a bit of applause when we got to the gate.

Not to mention the somewhat off putting cabin announcement "If you are the parents of any of the children who became unwell during the bumpy approach, please stay in your seats after we stop at the gates and the crew will be around with wet facetowels" - can't say thats an announcement I have experienced before!

As for the wheels down halfway down the runway second time round.
Me (to neighbour, halfway down the runway): Gee, that was a brilliant landing, I didn't even feel it!
**THUD****
Me: Erm, nevermind. They did an excellent job getting us down though.

Connecting flight to Adelaide delayed an hour as only operating one runway so inbound delayed, then catering and refuelling suspended due to "Category 2 high winds"

To top the rest of the day off - 1) my luggage failed to connect with me and is currently in ADL and 2) there was (I think) a QF A330 birdstrike at PER tonight (at least that was what the FA thought happened, the pilot just said "an emergency") so we spent about 45 mins circling. All in all a rather eventful first NAN run for me!!

This was going on Thursday night as well. All DJ flights were delayed. DJ436 was an hour late, as were multiple other flights. I was on DJ444 which left about an hour late. Thought we might miss curfew in ADL, pilot agreed and made an announcement that he was having extra fuel loaded just in case we had to divert. The young lady in the seat behind decided to call mum at that point, her trying to explain it to mum could have been in the funniest conversations thread. She was travelling with 2 blokes who I think were Adelaide Crows, needless to say she didn't come across as the sharpest knife in the draw.

I like your description of the 2nd landing - I was really starting to wonder if it was going to go around again!
We were about 2 hours late pushing back (QF11) and QF7 was also late mostly due to late connections arriving.
The take off, when it happenned, was a non event as was the whole filght (as far as the weather went!)

Can anyone tell me when 03-25 at SYD is ever used? I would have thought in those crosswinds using 25 would have been best - turning cross-runway winds into headwinds- at least for smaller planes? Obviously unsuitable for big planes and renders 16R/34L unusable as it crosses over... I'm not a pilot, just an enthusiastic amateur, so was just curious - can anyone explain this for me?

Without looking up the charts.
Is it 03 / 21 or 07 / 25 :?:

The numbers refer to runway headings so must always be 18(0) Deg out from each other.

It's 07-25 - my proof-reading before hitting post obviously wan't very thorough! (Sorry....) No idea where I pulled 03 from!

In this case, 07/25 was the worst option for landing from a crosswind perspective, based on the chart I posted:

I have been on the flight deck of a QF 744 at AVV when we did a 35kt crosswind touch and go, it was more a thump, oxy masks deploy in the J cabin, and go!

I must have missed this thread.

Where's JohnK today???

[edit]
Oh, he's on a later flight:
[/edit]
No. I managed to get on an earlier flight and all that achieved was get me in earlier but not on time! :p At 2h 20m that was the longest BNE-SYD flight I have ever been on. Many delays and cancellations.

I am just waiting for the JohnK update on delays!
Sorry but posted in the off-topic thread.

Flying again today and tomorrow and although it is looking a little better it is still not good. Just waiting for an sms to tell me flight has been delayed or cancelled. ;)

They've been using the cross runway for the last hour or 2 in SYD. There was a rather long line of waiting aircraft.
