GLT - whats with middle aged men and bomb jokes???

I just dont get this, a couple of days ago:

Police have charged a 50-year-old man today following an incident at the Gladstone Airport around 4.22pm today.
Police will allege the man was being processed as a passenger when he spoke about having explosives in his luggage.
The airport was evacuated and a police bomb technician cleared the man’s luggage.
The 50-year-old has been charged with one count of falsely state bomb present and is due to appear in the Gladstone Magistrates Court on March 31.

And today:

April 1, 2014 at 5:00 pm
Police have charged a 41-year-old man following an incident at the Gladstone Airport this afternoon.
Just before 12.30pm a man checking into a flight allegedly made a comment to a staff member regarding explosives contained in his luggage.
The airport was evacuated while a specialist police technician conducted a search of the luggage.
The area was declared safe a short time later.
The 41-year-old Calliope man has been charged with one count of making a threat regarding aviation security.
He is due to appear in the Gladstone Magistrates Court on April 29.

I'm guessing the second man said something to the effect of "good job I don't have a bomb like that other nitwit the other day"... and it went downhill from there... I figure at least.

I'm always concerned that I might accidentally say the b-word or make an inappropriate joke as part of normal conversation when I'm selected for explosives testing at security, just because they bring the topic up and my mind immediately associates the word 'explosives' with 'bomb'.

Why is one word more acceptable than the other anyway?

I know one thing for sure, whenever they talk about randomly selecting me and I correct them that I saw them before they saw me, and therefore chose them, they don't like it but it's true. If I didn't want to get swabbed every visit I wouldn't be so quick collecting my things...

That said, only time I've ever received a positive result was after getting off an OLP flight... I assume the higher likelihood of someone else having trace residue lead to some sort of transfer, or do they have false positives too?

Those machines definately have false positives. I pretty much used to always get picked till I figured out how to avoid getting picked... just loiter around slowly picking up your things till they have stopped someone else and then quickly pass through while they are still busy.

Anyway, one time the machine went RED off my clothes, so they decided to try again to verify and then the machine crashed. Rebooted it and tried again and it crashed again. Tried again and it crashed again. The guy told me to stop crashing his machine and just go.
