We were in London recently for a wedding. And with our last 2 days we planned to visit other family up in Manchester.
This was the week after the Tube strike, there were rumours of other industrial action to follow, so it put a certain edge on how we cud get back safely in time for our return flight out of LHR.
Getting a train back into London would require various and sundry Tube connections to Heathrow with our bags, always a hassle. BA fly Manchester to LHR T5, but that meant another tube shuffle T5 across to T2, and also meant we needed to add a time margin in case of flight delays (and then waiting a few hours for check-in to open when everything does indeed go right..)
But the booking app Trainline came up with another option: instead of the usual train back to Euston it proposed a CrossCountry service Man to Reading which connected at the station with a LHR bus. .
Went like a dream - one train right thru, we didnt have to deal with Tube connxs in London, the airport bus was 50m from the platform in Reading and dropped us right at T2, And even better, SQ were open for check-ins when we strolled up.
Worth checking some of these alternatives if it saves having to go right back into London..
