Is this possible.....

Separate PNR

Flying QF35 MEL-SIN departs 1145
Then MH616 SIN-KUL

MH will be operating checkin for a 1400 flight Mh148 MEL-SIN

Will I be able to get MH616 boarding pass at MEL?

(I know that boarding pass can be issued via other means: MH mobile checkin via smart phone, and transfer counter in SIN)

I suspect that it would be possible to get both boarding passes issued in MEL by QF until 1 September, when Qantas removes interlining with oneworld airlines on separate tickets.

Is this all on the same day? If so, QF35 timings are 1145/1755 then MH616 is 1915/2025 so you only have 1.20hrs to get from SIN T1 to T2 which is not much even if on the same booking. Will you have checked luggage?

QF can add in OW oncarriage flights on separate pnrs up until 31 August however even if the CSA adds in the MH oncarriage flights it still can be hit and miss as to whether you will receive the connecting MH boarding pass.

Not sure whether the issue is the link to the MH system or other issues. I would pre-allocate your seat with MH as that may help. A lot of times getting onwards boarding passes isn't possible despite an IATCI agreement in place if the flight is full and the connecting airline like QR blocks off all the exit rows, bulkhead rows and the last couple of rows of their flight so even if the flight is not oversold there are no actual seats available as obviously QF cannot unblock seats on QR flights.

Another reason can be if the onward flight is oversold eg connecting to EK as the whY cabin may be 100% allocated so they would need to upgrade an elite pax before onloading the pax currently without a seat. This would have to be done by EK staff at what ever city their flight was departing from.

Receiving the MH boarding pass has no bearing on whether the bagged can be tagged through to KUL so that can still be done up until 31 August 2016.

Even if MH 616 is open for terminal check-in, on MH, you will only be able to check-in and print BPs at the departing city (if on a separate PNR to the first check-in city ie MEL). I tried to get an onward BP printed at KLIA for an onward MH flight (separate PNR) with a very tight transit to no avail - not at the check-in desks, kiosks nor Golden Lounge. Fortunately I had made an OLCI and had BPs. and no checked luggage.

MH OLCI opens 48 hours prior. You will get 2 options for the boarding passes - (1) send to email or iPhone and (2) print BPs. They are not exclusive so you can do both. Option (1) produces a QR code BP. If you have Android mobile not iPhone, send it to your email to print off or retrieve the email attachment for the QR code to scan at the departure gate. This is important in you case as your transit time is very tight, depending on QF35s punctuality as well. MH requires a stamp on the option (2) BP, which are the normal looking BPs with the barcode, for regional and international flights and you may not have time to do so at the transfer desk at T2. The stamp is not required for the option (1) QR code BP (don't know why but it is a blessing). Do still print off (to PDF if you do not require a hard copy) the option (2) BP in case you need to chase QF later for points/SC if you've entered your QFF# for the MH sector).

Regarding your checked luggage, just hope QF is willing to tag the bags through to KUL for you. In light of the tight schedule, they may not after September 1 because you are on different PNRs. SIN is normally very efficient with transit bags but 2 years ago, we did the same flights as you've booked but on 1 PNR with QF. QF35 was late getting in, we just made it to T2 for the MH flight but our bags didn't. KLIA lost luggage was a pain to deal with. Rang QF in MEL, lost luggage located our bags and we got them about 1am the next morning.

At SIN, even if your bags are not tagged through to KUL, go to the MH transfer desk at T2, give them you checked luggage receipt for the MEL-SIN flight and they will locate and transfer the bags for you. You don't have to physically collect the bags off the carousel to check them in again. If you make it to the transfer desk and get your luggage retagged before the 30 minutes gate closing deadline, MH might hold the flight for you. They seem to do that a lot.

Good luck.

Thanks !!. Fortunately hand luggage only!!

Just an update on this. MH is able to print BPs for forward sectors on different PNRs but it totally depends on who is at the counter.

We had PEN-KUL(transit 3+hrs)-JHB flights 3 days ago on separate PNRs. Asked the check-in officer at PEN if he will tag our bags through to JHB adding the comment "it would be good if you can print the BPs for KUL-JHB as well". To my surprise, he replied in the affirmative and proceeded to type in earnest on his keyboard and produced BPs for both sectors.

Another matter relating to MH check-in. If you have flights out of secondary airports where MH only has a handful of flights a day and you've done OLCI with check-in baggage or still need to print a BP (there aren't kiosks at all airports), make sure you get to the check-in counters early. The check-in staff are likely to leave the counters unattended when they see all pax have checked-in. We arrived about 35-40 minutes before the flight on one occasion (hand luggage only this time) and not one MH staff in sight. On another, arrived about same time before the flight, the counter was closed but fortunately he was still at the counter chatting. We asked why he was closed and his reply was that all pax had checked in. I told him even though we had done OLCI, we still had bags to check-in. He reluctantly removed the counter closed sign.

While this is good to hear, I suspect it may have been a different story if you were checking in Penang for a flight on Air Asia (for example) and asking MH to print you a BP for KUL-JHB.

It would surely be silly to expect an airline to print another's BP or even be willing to tag baggage through, especially when the carriers are competitors and not even parts of the same alliance. I was referring to a situation where all sectors are on MH but different PNRs and to my earlier response to a situation that Quickstatus previously had. I just didn't want to mislead anybody reading the thread that's all.
