I am unable to fly at night, so to get from Perth to Europe has a few challenges. Last time I went QF from Perth to Singapore and return and then EK from Singapore to Dubai and Rome and home from Heathrow, Dubai and Singapore. We stopped overnight for at least one night in each place and it went very well. The costs in 2010 were A$1200 for the PER - SIN -> PER on QF and A$1200 from SIN -> Europe -> SIN on EK.
This time, I decided to fly in J, daughter in Y and to take a similar route.
It all had to change as SIN -> DXB -> LON and FRA -> DXB -> SIN on EK in J was A$6800 and in Y was A$1700. So we investigated other alternatives and decided to fly from PER -> KUL -> PER on a combination of QF, MH and D7. From there, KUL -> DXB -> LHR and return FRA -> DXB -> KUL on EK. The equivalent prices on EK were A$5065 in J AND A$1208 in Y. My daughter is paying A$320 for her two D7 flights. A considerable saving for both of us; me a poor retired person and my daughter, a poor student. These bookings have just been made and we leave in about a month. Cheap prices were also available flying in and or out of CPH or STO but the times were unsuitable.
The other alternative was to fly QR but their prices were higher and their times weren't as good for us. QR do have an interesting stopover option at present that some may find will fit into their plans nicely.
