ok a group of about 40 of us want to get from Brisbane to Mt Hotham airport or Albury airport.

It seems there are very few aircraft that can fly into Mt Hotham efficiently nonstop from Brisbane, so Albury it must be. Our 1st thought was to fly commercial, but no airline does BNE/ABX anymore (Jetgo did in a 36 seater I think it was) & going via SYD or MEL seems expensive, so thought about chartering a jet. Albury can apparently take a B737 or A319/20, but don't seem to be any of those around to charter at a reasonable cost, so thought about a F100 or F70 & then thought of Alliance. Any other suggestions & what should it cost & can it sit on ground at ABX while we go skiing for 5 to 7 nights or is cost too just high ?

Spoke to a specialist snow travel agent, who said it's just too hard/expensive for Queenslanders to go to Hotham & Falls, so many end up in NZ, but if a few charters operated, at a reasonable cost, they could fill them easily.

I expect that you'll need to be sitting down.

think it would be cheaper than commercial for that number of people or better if we could fill an 80 or 100 seater. Catch I gather is aircraft would probably have to return to BNE immediately, so need some Alburyites to head north. Are there a lot of very well paid ATO workers now in Albury ?

I don't think that there is any chance at all of this being a cheap exercise. In fact, I expect it would be much cheaper to simply split up and buy tickets across the various airlines to get yourselves to Albury.

I expect that we're all looking forward to hearing how you get on.....
catch is although there are 3 airlines flying SYD/ABX they are all turboprops, ie. can't all fly on same flight as cost prohibitive. One of group got an indicative cost on a F100 of $40K return, BUT that was not sitting at ABX for a week, but rather than going straight back to BNE.

Whilst this very much so needs to be split into it's own thread, why not simply travel to either CBR or MEL and that take one of the various snow shuttle buses from either of these locations to the snow. If you have that many people going you'd easily be able to charter your own bus. Chances are it'll be just as quick, and much much cheaper.

MEL is about 6 hours longer travel, but you're right, it might end up being only option that works.

Yes, when I was working we looked at charters - we used to do small ones a lot but anything over about 4 passengers started to add big money so I can imagine what one for 40 would be like. I remember getting quotes for charters from Bamaga to Cairns and they were pretty exxie. Most of our charters were in the NT.

Have you looked at Corporate Air? Whilst I know that you’re looking for 40 people, the Saab can accomodate up to 36 if my memory serves me correctly.

Having said that, they do also offer airliner size aircraft (from who I don’t know), but they’re advertising it on their website from $8000 - $15,000 per flight hour.
