General Medical issues thread

I saw a surgeon about my inguanal hernia and I am booked for surgery on the 23rd this month. He said I can keep doing basic strength training at the moment but with less intensity 🏋

Sounds like a straightforward operation and I'll be glad to not having this issue anymore. I don't love all the surprise fees though. The surgeon may or may not charge $500. The anaesthetist may or may not charge a fee. My fund may or may not cover this fee and that. So i have to call around and find out. I don't mind paying, i just wish they would tell me upfront.

Private health in Australia is absurdly opaque and confounding - and I work in the field.

I received a replacement pacemaker earlier this year. The anaesthetist came and saw me the night before and said he might need to charge a bit above the schedule fee depending on how long the operation was. It ended up being about $450 extra not covered. What was concerning was he returned later that night and asked if I had seen his car keys otherwise he would catch an uber home.
Hope it goes well.

Just ring surgeon and anaesthetist office to get a quote. The surgeon may have an assistant as well who might bill separately - ask surgeon.

The hospital will give you an indication of PHI excess and any other charges like pathology etc

It can be difficult to negotiate

Bu**er when you forgot where you parked your Maserati I suppose.

As some of you may know, Its been a big medical year for Mr Ellen10.

Thank goodness for our private health cover (we have reaped many past years of payments this year). Over $113,000 so far, we have reached the medicare safety limit and the pharmaceutical limit as well. Never experienced any of this before.

But he has come through it all, now has a gym program, under an exercise physiologist, building up that lost muscle and strength and getting back to his favourite things.

We are very grateful for these milestones and outcomes.

That is wonderful news - hopefully things will continue to improve.
