General Medical issues thread

9 days! So not long term at all. Hope you are on the mend Fm.

If you are still looking to reduce cholesterol ... I have recently had a consult with a lipids professor. As part of the consult I had to talk with his dietician who advised I should take psyllium husk in water. Apparently it grabs the fat/LDL in your intestines before it gets a chance to be absorbed and sent to your kidneys. Add it to water and quickly stir and swallow before it turns into a jelly.
The 9 days was for the issue to appear. The recovery was long and painful from what I recall FM posting at the time.

Out of curiosity how much pysllium did they suggest to take ?

it took much longer than 9 days to recover - it was a long, painful process. The 9 days was how long it took to create the problem.
Yes that’s right - 9 days to destroy me and probably a year to get back. It’s funny looking back. Have no idea how I managed the trip to New York or doing the sight seeing I did. Mr FM had to carry my handbag as I couldn’t manage it and I remember getting back to the hotel and Master FM had to lift my legs onto the bed as I was too tired to do it! So glad I did the trip though given what has happened this year!

It says to start with one teaspoon and build up to a tablespoon. I don't need psyllium (it's the plain version of Metamucil from what I can work out) so sticking to about 1.5 teaspoon. I wait a couple of hrs after I reckon my medication has been absorbed before a take it. Nothing fatty on my breakfast. If I am being naughty for dinner I might take another teaspoon before.
You can buy 450g at Coles health section for about $8.

I have just done a full bloods so next week get results. I am interested to see if my cholesterol has been lowered. Currently 2.8.

Sorry to hear that RK ... hope the treatment isn't too taxing for you :(

Pysillium husk works pretty well in baking too ... I use it in my keto almond bread. And failing that I mix it in with my yoghurt.
I make yoghurt using cultures. I'd hate to ruin it with psyllium. ;)

The heart Smart oatbran was reported to do that. If making a big mix of your own muesli, oats would probably be the biggest ingredient plus all the other stuff including the psyllium, and maybe extra oat bran. It’s still a good idea to drink water which ever way.

Arent the oats in porridge a good way to reduce cholesterol a little more easily?

Oh yes. Water is critical for the process.

We make porridge from rolled oats everyday. I buy 25kg at a time :) cook with water and some dried cranberries and Goji berries. Swirl through a little yoghurt after cooking and top with fresh blueberries. Yum and healthy. :)

Yes. Oats contain a natural soluable fibre callef beta- glucan which can help with cholesterol (lowers cholesterol reabsorption). From memory it’s about 1-1.5 cups of oats to give the required level.

I’m on day 6 of a migraine. Pain keeps coming and going and it’s been accompanied by patches of vertigo. It’s resisted OTC pain meds, panedeine forte and Valium now. And it’s spiked up my blood presssure, which is normally very standard to the high BP range.

Well and truly over it.

Have you tried Naprosyn? If you don't have a prescription and want to give it a try you can buy a pack of 10 only OTC as Naprogesic...same same.
I had debilitating migraines for decades until a neurologist prescribed me Naprosyn. Very rare to get one now. Doesn't work for everyone but effective for many.

Raw oats are nearly 3 times more effective as cooked oats at reducing LDL cholesterol. I tip a couple of tablespoons on my plain yoghurt in the morning.
If raw doesn't appeal to you then try soaking them in a jar of milk overnight in the fridge. Simply tip your milk on top of the dry oats, you'll need about 1/3 oats to 2/3 milk, give the jar a little shake and pop into the fridge. Put your car keys on top of the jar to remind yourself in the morning. 🤣

Although I’m not a supporter of alternative medicine, magnesium seems to be useful to treat migraines.

Saw the doctor today. If it doesn’t settle then I have a referral for CT and MRA. It’s back again - cleary the drugs have now worn off. I went and had my eyes checked yesterday and confirmed all fine there.

I think it might be chicken and egg - is the migraine causing the HBP or is the HBP causing the migraine. My sister and mother both have it and take meds but mine has been solidly normal always. Wasnt in the best frame of mind when he took it today.

How effective are the oats when they are eaten in Anzac biscuits or oatmeal cookies?

Asking for a friend.
