General Medical issues thread

vWD is pretty common comparatively. Lots of people with it are never formally diagnosed, because it generally doesn't cause life-threatening bleeding. Most often it's picked up in young women with very heavy periods, or prolonged bleeding after minor surgery (like wisdom teeth, tonsils etc).

Yes, I was just looking at drron's link, "VWD affects approximately 200,000 people in Australia", but I'm just curious about why none of the doctors in my dad's 82 years (he died 3 yrs ago) and my 60 have mentioned it. We've both had noticeable bleeding and bruising problems (not life threatening, but needing attention).

I have an unknown bleeding disorder. Basically my dentist complained that I bled a lot when she took my wisdom teeth out. I had all the tests available at the time and while I had a slightly elevated APTT and bleeding time (an old-fashioned test for clotting function), nothing could be put forward to explain it. I had it looked at again last year, but again nothing significant. I bruise easily though and bleed a little more than normal. It's annoying, but the haemologists I consulted (both times) told me it would never be life-threatening.

Tell that to all the bloody haematomas I get!

Well, the bleeding issue (actually it's clotting more like when in the body and excessive clotting time in a test tube) was only 'discovered' in the mid eighties! Many older doctors haven't even heard of it but the more recently trained doctors have. So much still to learn.

Nothing very serious compared to others on here, but I have had a minor on/off left ear ache for a couple of weeks. It would seem to be getting better and then start up again. I eventually did the right thing and went to the Dr today. The offending ear canal is apparently pink but he was having trouble seeing the ear drum due to a build up of wax. I also suspect it might have a small perforation because of some whistling noises in that ear if I 'pop' my ears. However, to make the day perfect he looked in my other ear and there are signs of a fungal infection in there.

So I am now on two different types of ear drops as the 'normal' ones can't be used if there is a chance of a perforated ear drum. I have to go back in a week and may require an ear syringe if it has not cleared up. And, naturally the 'special' ear drops are not on the PBS.

My SIL has been given the all clear from COVID-19 but still feels unwell from whatever a week after a holiday in London. Looked like we would have to hightail it back from London just after getting here. Panic over after she started self isolating.
Big gatherings are getting cancelled so we may not see any shows. MrsCove is getting good at using her elbows to open doors and we have bottles and wipes of sanitizer.
Boots have sold out of sanitizer but you can get it along the mall out of well located sites in the Canary Wharf shopping centre.
Now with lots of events cancelled I started thinking we may get a surge in babies being born. Could be as good as a power blackout.

With shop shelves being stripped bare it was reassuring this week to receive assurances I would not go short when self-isolating.

Saw the oncologist this morning.
He has ordered a pet scan to determine whether there are any other cell clusters lurking around.
Deja vu really back to September 2016 and post op CT scan.
If the only group of cells is the one in the lungs I'm looking at radiation. If more then its drugs.
I suggested Nivolumab to get my immune system hyped up to deal with the cancer cells and any potential covid 19 infection.
He surprised me by saying that a lot of patients on Nivolumab actually contract infections.
So I'm waiting to hear back from the pet scan operator.

Why did I immediately think of @john k when I saw this... 😊 View attachment 206251
Some people are meant to suffer more. It is written. Life's tough. It doesn't get any better.

Anyone have any experience with plantar fascitis? I've not been to GP yet but have been asking Dr Google. The outlook as always is very grim but then you'd expect me to think that way.

I had it once. Exercises, spikey ball etc. It should come good.

You need an exercise physiologist to give you exercises particular to the feet and the lower leg and arch supporting shoes with inserts if necessary.

So sorry Roger to hear about this latest news, good luck and maybe a coffee in a couple of weeks if you are feeling up to it?
Think social distancing might be better?

Her operation went well, 3 screws in a couple of bones, she will loose a little mobility in that ankle, guess there is always an ankle replacement down the line if needed.
Sorry to hear that - but at least it went as well as possible
