General Medical issues thread

MrLtL just visited the surgeon for the 6 week follow up; bloods are showing PSA 0.03 which is not too bad (and could be nothing) but not as good as the zero we were hoping for. It might mean the cancer had escaped the capsule which is what they always said was a possibility. Feeling a bit flat though. Another blood test in 4 weeks to see if it is a residual reading. :(

Daughter had flu vaccine today. I was preparing her by locking her in place and nurse gave ger the jab so quickly daughter did not notice.

Supposed to have a follow up vaccine in 4 weeks time but she's going to Thailand in 3 weeks time so follow up has to be early.

Is this a follow up for flu? I thought it was a single dose only?
Good that she didn't really notice it or feel it.

Sorry that the results were not where you had hoped. Fingers crossed for the next test.

Thanks Milboo. Maybe it’s all a storm in a teacup, but the biopsy mentioned it as having escaped the capsule. Even if it has it is slow growing apparently. But trying not to feel negative.

How’s the site of the mole removal? Hope it’s healing well as I seem to remember you said it was in a bad spot.

If it helps, mine was 0.01 ug/L at 7 weeks post-op - ie. still detectable, despite no indication of escape from the capsule. Next test will be when I get back from this year's DONE5 in early September. Fingers crossed for a zero then.

Well thankfully it is healing well as I popped the stitches on the weekend! Thankfully just the top layer so they came out yesterday (after just 10 days). They popped steri strips on - with a “they should last 3 days” - yep, lost one this morning and 2 of the remaining 3 are loose!

I’m much more comfortable with them out. And I can swim again.

I’m sorry I missed this. Is it possible it’s still clearing from his system? Very stressful for you both. :(

Sorry to hear and wishing you both the best for next blood test.

Oh, sorry to hear that result isn't what you were hoping for. As you say, it leaves one feeling let down a bit, but hey, its only a very low reading. Fingers crossed for next blood test.

@JohnK - the second dose can be anywhere from 4 weeks to 12 months.

If it's the first season they've had the flu shot, children need 2 doses not closer than 4 weeks apart and not greater than 12 months apart (although obviously sooner is better for immunity within the current season).

FWIW, I've had both minidocs vaccinated, then we go overseas for three weeks, and they'll get their second shot mid july which will be ~ 2 months after first.

We had the 2018 shingles shot today at our Californian pharmac_. The second shot is to be within 6 months. This new vax is rated as far more effective than the previous ones. Cost was $175 USD.
Rated at about 95%+ effective which is much higher than the previous shots.
So many of our friends and associates have been getting shingles we decided we wanted to avoid the chance of getting it too.
In Australia I think it is free for folks over 70 so we don’t qualify.
Our second shot will be in November.
Tonight our left arms are a little bit sore and we were warned about some side effects that are possible.

Shingles is not fun. Both my wife and I have had it - I was about 54 when I had mine. Luckily, we recognised the symptoms early and got the antiviral treatment in time and only had a few days pain and no ongoing effects.

Some of our friends have not been so lucky with shingles as they have had some lasting nerve pain.

That is what happened to my father, in his 80's, so we acted very quickly when our rash etc appeared.

Because I'm in NZ longer than I expected I had to visit a doctor $100 (ouch) but meds only $5 each for Aussies.

Interestingly my thyroid tablets don't require refrigeration so I'll be following up if they're available in Oz when I'm back
