General Medical issues thread

Yeah, I have a friend who has just returned from a cruise and she picked up kennel cough on board, (well not exactly as she isn't a dog and she wasn't in kennels but it's the hacking cough and lurgy you can get when travelling).
Whooping cough?

Can anyone tell me if the topic of surgery for a meniscal tear has already been discussed in this thread.....
Not wanting to read all 172 pages this late a night.....

Mine's just a run of the mill lurgy, hot/cold/sweats/coughs/muscle aches and pains, the usual.
I blame the aircon. You are constantly going from extreme humidity to extreme cold and of course all the others that go around coughing without covering their mouths doesn't help.
My Canberra Lao friend did pick up a strain of the Asian flu last October when he and his wife had a quick visit to Vientiane for a wedding, he ended up in Canberra ICU via ambulance.

Interesting you should say that. In her case, it isn’t but another friend did get it on a cruise from Singapore to Hong Kong over Christmas. They thought it was bronchitis at first.
And its so easy to be vaccinated against it, I do wonder why more people dont bother.

Whooping cough vaccination wasn’t around when we were kids. Nor were mumps and measles. We just got them! And as older adults we don’t seem to bother with them now and GP’s don’t discuss them at all.

Anyone who comes into contact with kids/babies should be having the whooping cough vacc. Its paired with tetanus and diptheria and pretty cheap compared with the alternative.

I agree. I have had tetanus and diphtheria though. My Aunt had diphtheria as a teenager. Not good at all. There’s just not much discussion about it with the GP’s.

Have just found out that licorice substantially raises your blood pressure. This lack of knowledge has caused all sorts of issues trying to lower said blood pressure. Back again next week.

Fortunately I don't suffer white coat fever.

On a different note, ho on earth can a doctor be ten minutes late for the second appointment of the day? Doesn't auger well for the rest of the day.

I was held 30 minutes late for first appointment. Dr was talking with a Med Rep. I was not impressed and no apology either. I love chocolate bullets. You raise an interesting point. Hmmm.

Well then WHAT are Qantas doing to their elite travellers by having licorice allsorts in their lounges !!!

The doctor spent 10 minutes longer on the first appointment?

My GP in Brisbane has 10 minute appointments unless you want a longer consultation. I turn up at 1:55pm for a 2:00pm appointment and I am not seen until 2:20pm.

The secretary said "The patient has every right to a long 30 minute consultation".

I said "Not when she only booked a 10 minute appointment and now making me wait".

I waited 1h 30m to be seen at yesterday's hepatology outpatient clinic. I was about to walk out as I'd had enough. All the extra time waiting comes off my end of day at work. I left the office at 9:05pm yesterday and had dinner then fell asleep. Wasted evening.

Had an appointment with my (public hospital) oncologist today at 11am. He came looking for me at 1055, just as I was exiting the nurses station where I had been weighed and had my BP taken. Nurse commented I had put on 4 kg since last weigh in 3 months ago. Must stop eating as much, but food tastes so good now. Oh, the onco showed me my latest scan from last week - nothing significant to report.

Tomorrow into the breech again to try and get the botched musclewall repair fixed and some flywire put in to reinforce. Have to be at hosp at 7.30 am - didn't realise there was such a time in the morning.
