Garuda reveals Brisbane return

Garuda Indonesia will reinstate services from Brisbane to Jakarta and Denpasar in August after a five year hiatus, as the carrier signalled further expansion is on the cards. Speaking at the Garuda Indonesia Travel Fair in Jakarta, president and chief executive Emirsyah Satar confirmed the reintroduction of the airline’s fourth Australian port to its network. He identified it as part of its “Quantum Leap” strategy which aims to significantly improve competitiveness by 2015. Vice president Australia and South West Pacific, Bagus Y Siregar, added the move came on the back of strong growth in demand for travel to Indonesia from the Australian market. “Australian travel to Indonesia is growing each year, with a 20% increase in passenger numbers in the first half of this year on the same period in 2011,” he said. “We have also seen significant growth in demand in Queensland, particularly in the leisure sector.” The six times weekly service will fly from Brisbane to Jakarta via Denpasar and will be operated by Boeing 787-800 aircraft. Satar also outlined major fleet expansion plans which will see Garuda take delivery of 24 new aircraft next year. “This will allow us to expand our domestic and international network,” he said.

News seems to take a while to filter down to Australia (AKL is also being reinstated)!

Garuda are looking at a 5 year average fleet age target (currently 6.5 years versus QF mainline at 10.6) as they renew and replace, and it looks like they are heading back to Brisbane next year to compete with Qantas, we live in interesting times.

Mmm.. Had been confirmed for some time, after the long absence from BNE.
Thought that GA would have upped the ante by offering a better than 737-800.
There is no point of difference to VA on this sector, apart from solid demand from BNE catchment.
AN alternate offering to VA though..

VA run a 738 as well I gather?
