Not sure how it is bad for Qantas, if they are confident of enough of back load bookings to make a profit to fly half empty one way. Freight companies do it every day.

Doesn't matter IMO - it's still an international service with domestic levels of equipment.

They'd surely have loading manifests to ascertain viability to fly up for a return load.

Reminds me the glory days in the 1970 flying around the world in almost empty 747s and having the centre 6 seats to myself. Did a QF BKK-SYD that was like this and the CA (they were hosties back then) sitting with me and chatting. Another LH from JNB-AMS Christmas eve 1976 was almost this good too.

I suspect most airlines are trying to sell any unoccuped seats through rewards at least 2 weeks from departure.
So just before Lunar New Year, when there was low patronage outbound from Australia, there were plenty of reward seats.
You can also able to see closer to departure date, all unsold Economy Class are appearing for redemption:
