Sorry if this has been asked a million times before.

Thinking of joining Star Alliance.
1 - Should both my wife and I join with seperate accounts? She flies more that I do and a combination of business class and economy. I just fly when going on holiday and then only economy.

2 - which is the best member to join, we are flying london to istanbul in economy probably with Turkish Airlines and also london to sydney probabley with Asiana. She is also flying london to USA no idea who with.

I guess our aim is to accumulate as many miles to get free flights in the future and need to hold the miles for as long as possible

Thanks for any help

both should join as you don't get points if you don't.

need to know exactly which airlines (or choice of airlines) both of you will be flying to determine whether it should be star alliance or oneworld.

Hi and thanks for your reply.

The flight to Istanbul has been booked with Turkish Airlines
London to Sydney looks like it will be Asiana
The trips to America are either United or American Airlines

Thanks

Where are you based and what are the regular trip you will be doing in the future?

Based in the UK at the moment. Will be based in Sydney later this year so trips back to UK and local vacations are what we will be using the miles for

Based on the fact that you will be based in Syd with travel mainly to UK and within Australia, I would suggest Qantas (Oneworld).

With Star Alliance, you can't earn any points for domestic flights and you have more choices with Oneworld travelling to UK. Also, earning points with a credit card is easier with QF when you are in AUS. Amex offer 1.5 points for every A$1 spent.

So for the flights you are going to do I would suggest you fly Oneworld airlines if possible taking into account schedule and price.

Within Star Alliance- join one of the US based programs. The miles can be kept alive as long as there is some activity every 18 months, plus you can purchase miles to top up an account-- esp since your wife's account is likely to be more than yours.
