Airberlin appears to be running a promotion currently where you can get 4 months of Silver Topbonus status for free. Yes, really.

Silver status is equivalent to Qantas Silver, Velocity Silver and oneworld ruby status.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a link in English. If you understand German and/or can translate the website, then you should be fine. But I thought I'd spell out the promo in English here to make things easier.

How the promo works

1. If you aren't already a member of the Airberlin Topbonus program, create an account for free: https://topbonus.airberlin.com/web/tb/anmeldung?locale=en_DE
2. Visit this page on the Airberlin website: https://topbonus.airberlin.com/web/tb/start_x2
3. Login to your Topbonus account. Then, on the page linked above, click "Hier Silver Card testen"
4. You should then see a green box confirming your registration for the promotion:

5. Your account should be updated a few days later with your new Silver status (this does not happen immediately).

What you get

You'll receive Topbonus Silver status, and all the associated benefits, for at least 4 months. This time is calculated from the end of the first month that you registered for the promotion, and ends at the end of the 4th month after this. (So, if you register on 1 November you would receive status until the end of March 2017.)

Extend the status with a status challenge

You'll also have the opportunity to complete a status challenge to extend the silver status for another twelve months. You would need to earn 8,500 status miles or take 8 airberlin/Niki flights within this 4-month period to qualify.

Additionally, you can earn Gold status by earning 17,000 status miles or taking 20 airberlin/Niki flights within the initial 4 months.

Terms & conditions
The main T&Cs, as per the airberlin website:
  • Promotion ends 30 November 2016
  • You technically are supposed to be a member of "Xing" to qualify for this promotion, although I registered without being a member and the consensus on the German-speaking forums I've read is that this is not actually checked.

So do the above and you are oneworld/Qantas/Virgin silver?

I have signed chicka up... perhaps if they send a membership card she can status match it across to [wiki=Star Alliance]Star Alliance Silver[/wiki] in any number of programs and eventually loop back around to something useful.

Thanks Matt!

Well it took a little longer than I expected, but I received an email today confirming my Topbonus Silver status.

I signed up about a week ago and the silver status came through today as well. Thanks for the link Mattg!

In case anyone is interested, I just discovered that you can status match Airberlin Silver to Sixt Gold status. I probably won't bother myself as I rarely use rental cars, but I'll leave the link here in case it's useful for somebody: Sixt rent a car & Airberlin

Interesting. Just signed myself up and will do the same with the wife, and will then see what happens.

Thanks Mattg.

To take advantage of this (ie. obtain the benefits from other OW airlines such as CX and BA) would I need to change my FF number as recorded on my various OneWorld bookings to the TopBonus number? I've currently got my QFF number on my bookings so I'll accrue points I've got some chance of using.

Thanks Mattg for this offer ,

And for those who like me wondering how many Qantas flight would take to earn 8500 Status Miles with Airberlin to keep the Silver for another 12 months .

According to Red e-Deal fare type from Qantas SYDNEY - MELBOURNE will fall into those booking class E, G, N, O, Q, S

SYD MEL Miles Distance 443 miles

G , V , S will earn 50% Distance flow = 220 Miles
N , O , Q will earn 50% Distance flow = 110 miles

Work out you need to do 38 x SYD - MEL one way red e-Deal flight to reach 8,500 Status Miles with Airberlin .

2 x SYDNEY - HONG KONG Cheap Economy Return flight maybe do able with 4566 Miles distance if your booking class fall into G , V , S which earn 50% of distance flow .

Can anyone tell me/ direct me to the benefits on VA with Topbonus silver?

If it was me, unless I wanted the additional baggage I would probably keep the bookings with QFF if that is the program you want to keep the points with. At the airport try and use the business check in lane, if they ask just flash the OW ruby card.

Others thoughts?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

That's a good question. In theory, you should be entitled to the benefits of your Topbonus status without having to change the FF number on your booking/s. Assuming that Air Berlin sends out membership cards (and current indications are that they do, but it could take a few weeks) then you should be able to just show your card when you check in to use the priority counters etc.

Failing that, there is a trick that you can use... input your Topbonus number into the booking, then log into either the Royal Jordanian or Qatar Airways website after checking in (and once you've used your status entitlements) to change the FF number back to your Qantas one.

We're flying in 2 weeks so sounds unlikely we'll be in possession of TopBonus cards - maybe I can print temporary card on the website?

That trick is interesting - any reason why I wouldn't just switch the number back on the websites of the airlines we're flying (CX, BA)?
