Found some money on plane - what should I do?

$50 might buy you a chocolate bar or two at the airport

Sorry but I have no faith in charities, as you see the CEO's and executives all driving around in their Mercedes and Lexus's and the poor starving children in some backward country getting 10 cents in the dollar from the donations.

Buy a carton of stubbies and invite your best friends around on Sunday arvo and watch the footy

Most of the time charity's do good work. Unfortunately it is the one or two which don't play by the rules.

I tend to donate to Change For Good since I have trust in UNICEF will do right by me and my donation. The fact that it's extremely easy to do so via OW airlines is simply a bonus, plus it's a great way of getting rid of small amounts of foreign currency which would make no difference to my day, but could make the world of difference to a community somewhere out there.

I also tend to donate to some of the local charities operating here in Canberra, since I've actually seen them out and about in the community doing good work.

I tend to avoid any charity which uses any types of "sales-person" tactics to get me to part with my money.

Go to the casino and put it all on black. :)

Alternatively, donate it, but make sure you get a tax receipt for it if you have a sizable taxable income and benefit from the tax deduction.

I think some people also have a problem with how much of your donation goes to administrative costs.

Keep it if you really need it, donate it if you don't.
Giving it back to whoever lost it is impossible, so how you answer that question is the real test of your honesty.

Incidentally there is no such thing as "the previous owner" or "the rightful owner" as we never own money, we merely possess it.

Which reminds me. Are you around on 27 March or are you visiting MEL? Passing through SIN and will more than likely go to Casino for a few hours around 11:00pm if you want to catch up for a drink?

I'm in Osaka that weekend. Next time, definitely.

Although I respect the suggestions of well-thinking fellow Aff people regarding "donating it to a good cause" etc, I think there is another philosophical angle that I can add which will lessen your ability to make a decision...

Some of us believe in non-mainstream concepts such as "karma" and "luck", "fortune", etc. I think that all those who non-thinkingly assume that this $50 note was accidentally "lost" by the unfortunate owner, are making an unsound assumption.

Perhaps he/she actually discarded it!! Got rid of it!! Maybe it brought them bad luck. Even if they did not actively drop it, the fact that it was lost to them, causing the relevant financial penalty inherent in such loss, would mean that this note has proven itself already to bring suffering to those who possess it. The negative impact of this note is thus a proven fact, no matter which version you choose to believe in explaining its abandonment between the seats.

Given this proven negative influence of said note, I put forward the idea that it would be very cruel to place this harbinger of evil into the hands of a charity. Are you trying to bring them misery???!!!

Well no one suggested donating to the Shane Warne Foundation.

Not sure about other states but in WA there is a criminal offense called "stealing by finding", true story. so you are obliged to hand in anything of value that you find to the Police. They keep it for 3 months and if the owner is not found, it's yours to keep. Having said all that, a $50 note on a plane ? Go with previous posters and do what you want with it.

Buy a ticket in tonight's $25M Powerball and you could turn it into a really big dilemma !!

juddles, are you PUTI ?:lol:

As this unfortunate Macquarie Banker found out.

A guy that leaves substantial amounts of cash under his desk at work? Please tell me he was the Office Junior, and not the Compliance Officer. What a silly twit, he will kick himself for the rest of his life.

As far as leaving things on planes go, I'm sure either we or someone close has done it. As we know, you have limited chance of getting that iPad, Kindle or phone back. Where do they go? Surely the Lost and Found departments aren't all giving them to charity within 24 hours, stymieing our efforts at tracking them down.

I would have thought vast piles of cash lying around was par for the course at MacBank ;)
