The Federal Government should consider a foreign airline’s willingness to invest in Australia before granting it access to the market, Qantas has said.
In its submission to the Aviation Green Paper, Qantas said more weight should be given to an
airline’s intention to promote and invest in the local market.
"Foreign carriers are naturally predominantly interested in attracting outbound travellers
destined for either their home country or points beyond, i.e feeding traffic to and through
their hubs," Qantas said.

Blah, blah, blah... Their tiresome protectionist bleating seems to be coming to naught, so they are trying another tactic to protect their market share. It's transparent, and pathetic. If their product is so great, why are they scared of the competition?

Agreed. By their own logic, Qantas should have to demonstrate how it intends to keep investing in each market it currently flies to.

What airline is going to want to invest beyond what they absolutely need to when entering a market?

An airline already:

  • Pays relevant access and landing fees/charges for the airport,
  • Invest staff time and money in negotiating the relationship, who also spend while in town on hotel, transportation, food, tourism activities,
  • Buy food, fuel and services whilst in port,
  • Increase local employment opportunity across all aspects of airport operation, and
  • Increase potential revenue at airport concessions through increased passenger traffic.

Is that not enough investment by a new carrier establishing themselves in a new port?

Did anyone else see a massive pig fly past their window (and I'm not talking about an A380 either).

Yes, not too mention the carriers investing in multiple daily services to cities other than Sydney.

Foreign carriers are naturally predominantly interested in attracting outbound travellers destined for either their home country or points beyond

And of course these carriers never ever attract inbound passengers such as those from UK/Europe to Australia (in case of Middle Eastern carriers) or from Asia (in case of MH, TG, SQ, CX ...) . If QF were to look eastbound, I would be very surprised if carriers east of Australia (NZ, UA, AC and maybe even LAN & Aerolineas Argentinas) are carrying more Australians out of Australia than foreigners into Australia - whereas I am sure QF are carrying a high proportion of Aussie pax and their $$$ out of the country.

However if I were a QF shareholder, good on QF for at least trying .. they at least owe it the shareholders to try and protect their interests.
