This will be the first time I'll be flying overseas since getting my Amex card. Anyone aware of any benefits to purchasing flights with Amex? (direct from airline or through 3rd party e.g. webjet/zuji). Also can the Amex Selects discounts in New York be used with my Aussie Amex card? Thanks.

Depend on your card. Travel insurance may be complimentary, some Amex cards have special airfare deals (but usually fairly useless).

I just assume that credit card travel insurance is useless for international travel and that you need to purchase a seperate one. I was hoping for either discounted flights or multiple points like the current deal with AirNZ.

Other threads exist re the Platinum Charge Card (as opposed to Platinum Credit Card) and its insurance. Apparently it is better than most 'purchased' insurance policies.

As stated previously some cards include Travel Accident Insurance which covers loss of life or limb, there are also some cards like the Platinum Charge and Credit Cards which include medical coverage, delays, hire car loss damage waiver etc.

Best place to check is to bring up your card on the Amex website then check the benefits, there will also be links to the policy documentation in the fine print at the bottom (if any).

For example if I visit the American Selects US website, do I get discounts even though I'm an Australian Amex cardholder? I'm currently enrolled in the Ascent program so I'm not sure if I even qualify.

The Selects discounts apply to ALL Amex cardmembers worldwide (regardless of whether the card is issued by Amex themselves, or by a 3rd party - eg. one of the banks). You just have to follow the conditions of the Selects offer - eg. many businesses ask you to show a printout of the offer, and some ask for a code or for 'Selects' to be mentioned etc...

If you have a platinum card (or above), also checkout http://www.entre.com - deals here (after logging in with partial card number) are restricted to Platinum and Centurion cards (which does include 3rd party platinum Amex cards) :)

It does not like either of my Platinum cards.

I think this is only for platinum charge cards, my platinum edge credit card doesn't work.

Make sure you change the country to Australia, and then enter the number of digits requires after the page has reloaded for Australia - I believe it needs 8 digits :) Let me know how you go! :)

I think the entree program only works with Westpac issued platinum cards.

So I guess the question is apart from the travel insurance, is there any point to booking flights with an Amex card? I'm looking at booking flights with my 28 Degrees card as an alternative.

It also works with my CBA Amex number - so perhaps it might be limited to bank-issued cards then?

That seems fairly backwards....unless it's not as comprehensive as the American Selects program? Can't imagine why Amex cardholders would be more restricted than bank ones for Amex benefits...

Does not work with my Amex plat charge or Amex plat reserve cards. Does work with my CBA diamond amex.
