Robbak, perhaps if you indicate if you have any status with Qantas that would help. Also because you are going at fairly popular times you may need to use your imagination in the routes taken.

Re: Flying to Londonat Xmas

If you log into your FF account you can get a look at available seats, From Melb there are some available options in econ and possible econ plus or business for late Nov. Coming back seems to be more difficult but there are a couple of seats on the 31st otherwise its Feb.

Try and be flexible on date and look at other departure points eg Syd or Bris then its only a short domestic flight you have to take and usually you can book your bags all the way through. Status helps if you get stuck but there look to be available options. You could also look at options for points to Sing, Bangkok or Hong Kong and pick up cheap fares from there or slights to there and FF points beyond maybe in econ+ or business if you have the desire for that.

Qantas FF will also take your booking via the phone but they will charge you for the privilege either points (or $ I think). but via the internet is very easy and a good way to search available seats.

Search through the FF site to see what planes you might want as the A380 appeal to some vs a 747 etc.

Have a good flight, from experience pack your warmer clothes its a little chilly in the UK at that time of year but Christmas is magical over there.

Re: Flying to Londonat Xmas

I booked SYD - BKK about March this year for flight out 14 Dec originally wanted LAX which was a no availability.

Last date available is 24th Nov to LHR and none in Jan only 29 Dec return -and it may only be one seat -

As stated before it is popular time if poss find an interesting round about way.

Don't like your chances but good luck.

Re: Flying to Londonat Xmas

Try to snare cheap tickets to BKK/HKG/KUL.
Then call QF and try to redeem 2 x tix to LHR on QF, RJ (or AY if flying via HKG). I say "to call", because redeeming award flights ex-Asia is difficult because of the dubious QF CC requirement. Generally the flights from HKG-LHR are available but there will always be slim pickings on the MEL-HKG legs. Qantas will probably only have availability via PER/SYD and/or on a Jetstar flight. Also check the CX flights from HKG-AMS; for some reason this route is often undersold.

Redeeming to London at that time of year is difficult because it is peak season and airlines release very few award seats. Qantas will give you nothing; it is their cash cow after all.
