Hello. I will be flying to Glasgow from Brisbane with emirates in May. My first ever international flight!

Having never been on a major carrier, let alone a big international flight could you guys give me an idea of what i could expect?

Any advice or smallest detail would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Vic, congrats on your first ever international flight!

From looking around here and the Emirates website you should be able to get a general idea of what to expect in terms of food and entertainment etc. If you haven't selected a seat, you might want to have a look at a website such as seatguru.com to get an idea of good spots within the aircraft, and then you should be able to reserve your seat either through your travel agent or online, depending on how you originally booked. You might also like to join the Emirates frequent flyer program, Skywards, as you can use your points for gift vouchers and other items as well as flights, which is more useful if you aren't flying much.

In terms of international travel, you should start thinking about things like passports, visas, and what you plan to use for money whilst overseas. You can change money here or overseas, you can consider travellers cheques (I haven't used these for years although I think I have $50 lying around somewhere!) or you can use your credit cards or EFTPOS/debit cards overseas. Beware that these may attract fees, and that not all cards will work overseas so you should check with your bank before going. Also let them know where and when you are going so they know to expect overseas charges and don't cancel your card while you are away!

I would start reading up about your destination - guides like Lonely Planet are useful for an overview but try not to become too distracted by it - there are lots of great places that aren't in there, and the internet will likely be more useful for food and accomodation bookings.

Finally, are you flying Brisbane -Singapore-Dubai-Glasgow? Singapore airport is great, and getting $20 or so in Singapore dollars is handy for food and small items. There are ATMs in the terminal in Singapore and I always get my money from there rather than changing it in AUstralia. Please note that if going via Singapore there is no point getting Duty Free alcohol/liquids leaving Australia - it's not cheaper in BNE, and you can't take it through the security checkpoint at SIN as the 100mL restrictions apply.

Thats a broad overview, if there are more specific things that you would like to know please ask!

Thanks mate, Yeah i've got all of that travel stuff sorted and checked out the websites.

I was just after a realistic idea of whats it going to be like e.g meals, service, entertainment etc and What i can expect at glasgow airport (have read some reviews on skytrax and few have nice things to say)

Yes its brisbane direct to dubai and then onto glasgow. Also what is the go with the emirates lounge at brisbane? Is it strictly for business/first customers or can us plebs in economy get in for a fee? Additionally, are upgrades often available on this route, and i dont mean snagging a free one but paying for one upon check in? Any idea on the cost?

Thanks mate
