Flying to Cairns

Hi all FFers out there

it has been a couple of weeks since i was last on here, I am looking flying to cairns in August to see some friends. I was planning on doing a ASA oneway and booking a normal return flight to Perth.

After going to the Qantas site and finding the new search didn't have ASA i instantly turned to here and discovered the multiply threads about ASA demise with 1 glimmer of hope of calling up and booking through the call centre.

I have done a ASA once before, to Cairns and managed to get a business flight to Cairns for points and pay, for 36k and $180.

My question to FFers out there who have managed to do it. Is it still as good value?

Potentially, 'yes'. You need to search for Classic Award availability and then call the special 1300 number and ask for an Any Seat Award to be booked into class U. You should then be quoted the classic level of points and you copay the taxes on your credit card.

Just was on the phone to Qantas and they didn't have any idea what i was asking when followed the steps from the http://www.australianfrequentflyer....t-flyer-program/asa-change-summary-52004.html thread is it worth to just try again and hope the next operator knows how to do it?

Yes, definitely worth trying another agent.

I've done a few JASAs from CNS-PER, and when I last booked in April it was 72,000 points + ~$383 return via SYD or MEL, and earns 320 SCs return. It was a good value run from my perspective.

And yes, check for a Classic Award booking on the date/route you want first, before calling up to book the (m)ASA.

No, fortunately, I haven't had to call up to book one yet... I had to call up to cancel a few (didn't need them anymore) and that was very easy... they didn't even try to charge me a fee

A friend has called up and had to try at least 3 times before getting an agent who was able to process the request successfully.

I have already reached gold with QFF (and no hope of getting to platinum) and I still have an upgrade with virgin and if i can't get the business ASA i might just use Virgin!

My friend was booking a different routing... he's based in ISA.

I managed to find a JASA (U class) in October for 36k points plus about $75 (from Sydney). The good seats are still there, or well the pricing hasn't changed much (I think the co-payment was about $40-60 before price hikes were reported).
