Quick question, staying in Washington, for my domestic flight from LAX do I fly into IAD. Hotel not booked yet, but thinking about Alexandria area.

Thanks in anticipation

Closest to Alexandria and main DC area is by far Reagen (DCA) but generally it's more expensive to fly into there. IAD is really not far away though. Just don't fly to BWI. I would fly the cheapest once you consider the cost of transport from/to airport - budget carriers to IAD May still work out more economical

DCA.

There are shuttles to hotels in Alexandria, its less than 5 miles away.
IAD means getting a rental car or expensive taxi or prohibitively long bus ride(s).

Well worth the additional $$ to fly into DCA. Plus very cool take off and landing with DC buildings/monuments in full view.

Cheers

Agree. I go to Arlington every couple of years and I go out of my way to make sure I fly into DCA. I know it gets mixed reviews, but I have found alaskan pretty good. Thats who I flew last time (over a year ago now).

ditto to using DCA. I go our of my way to fly in/out of DCA.

My very first trip to Washington I got a fare off QF into IAD & out of BWI. Any fare saving was lost on the transfer.

one thing that I did do when I flew into IAD was to stay near the airport that first night. Next day I spent the day at [h=1]National Air and Space Museum, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. Was nice to hang around the lazy space shuttle, concorde and SR-71[/h]My hotels are in Alexandria. The hotel runs a free shuttle every 20 minutes. The DCA airport is also relatively small by US standards. Easy to get in/out of.

If for some reason you don't use a DCA shuttle, then the local metro also has a terminal at the airport.

Also, try to get a direct flight LAX-DCA.
