I was hoping if you can help a novice (me) with some questions regarding flying from Mel to Narita. I have about 350k Qantas FF points and I would like to make the most out of it. I am planning to take the family (4 people) to Tokyo in Dec 2016 (yes very long time-frame and anything could happen) leaving the week beginning the 12 Dec and coming back to melbourne on 2 Jan.
My questions -
If I purchase economy class tickets (what tickets should i purchase?) - how likely is it for me to use my points for an upgrade to business class? Can I use my points straight away to secure the upgrade? or Do I have to make a "bid" and wait?
Or would it be worth to just use the points to get business class tickets straight away with those points.
