I am flying out of San Jose to Australia via LAX. My bags will be checked in all the way and land at LAX at terminal 5 at 7.09pm and will be departing Virgin in terminal 3 at 9.50 pm. My question is i am departing San Jose domestic and the Virgin flight takes off from a domestic terminal at LAX, is there a special customs area to go through for international? or do i just go through normal security, go to the lounge and then go the gate?

Thereis no immigration or customs on departure from the US, like there is in Aus. Who are you flying with from San Jose to LAX?
If your bags are ticketed through to Aus, then you just go to Terminal 3, through security, and lounge until you need to oard your flight.

Even though it was all booked through Virgin, and using a sharecode flight through Delta and i am guessing that San Jose will not have its own Virgin check in counter so i will be checking in at the delta counter?

Your codeshare will checkin at DL yes. They will tag the bags all the way through to AU for you if you want. There will be no need to see your bags again in LAX.

One tip, when you arrive at the Delta terminal in LAX take the T5-T3 shuttle located at gate 52B. This will avoid the hassle of going through security at LAX.

One caveat, you must be holding a boarding pass for the VA flight to Australia in order to use this service.
