Now that 2nd door between the cabin and the galley area they are making a requirement in the US - how would that have affected this? It might have prevented the backup crew and passengers from saving the day had it been locked at that moment.

It might be of use where both pilots were incapacitated, but not of use where one pilot is acting deliberately.
Ah yes, I think that's what happened in the Germanwings.

One pilot in cabin trying to get back in. Pushed the code. Wait out the delay but the rogue pilot in the flight deck kept cancelling it.

The second door is for when a pilot leaves the flight deck. So in this instance it will likely not have been deployed.

It is possible however that on hearing a commotion, and attempting to enter the flight deck themselves, cabin crew may lock such a door to prevent passenger access. That would have been detrimental in this case, preventing assistance reaching the controls.

Slightly Off Topic but related to this incident - Air Crash Investigations TV documentary actually saved this flight!! This Documentary is normally shown on Channel 7 and who would have thought this documentaries saves lives??

I think it might have delayed things but not prevented as I’m sure the second door would’ve been quickly opened by the Cabin crew between the coughpit door and the second door.

Maybe this incident will prompt the protocols in the US being underlined that the second door should be locked only in the case of one of the pilots emerging from the coughpit.

How did the passengers get into the flight deck?
Apparently the injured Captain let them in.
Appears the aircraft landed without a rudder.
Lack of a rudder wouldn't be an issue in most cases. But, its loss is probably from flutter, which would indicate that the aircraft was well beyond the normal flight regime. I think that they were probably lucky that it didn't break up when the NON PILOT was recovering from the dive. You can't (or at least shouldn't) just pull. At about 4g major bits are going to start coming off.

Wasn't it 14,000feet in 29sec??
That is just distance travelled in 29 seconds - does not tell us much.
We now initial vertical velocity is zero - the aircraft flying level.

In order to calculate acceleration we need final velocity before non pilot pulled back on controls in order to calculate change in velocity over a period of time.

But a delay of seconds could be critical.

By the time they realise what’s going on I’m sure the first thing on their mind isn’t going to be ‘we’ve got to unlock the secondary safety door’ - to allow pax to rush forward and assist.

Just imagine if this went down, would have been a huge Boeing pile on until they got more detail from the onboard recording.

I wonder what the deadheading crew had been thinking when it started going off track. No doubt thought it was another MAX issue.
