MELBOURNE, 14 January 2021: Flybuys, Australia’s most popular rewards program, and Velocity Frequent Flyer, Virgin Australia’s loyalty program, have today announced an exciting update to their partnership that will help Aussies collect and transfer points even faster.


This update will halve the minimum number of Flybuys points needed to transfer to Velocity while substantially improving the points transfer rate by almost 15%, helping members to collect even more Velocity Points with Flybuys.


Previously members were able to transfer a minimum of 2,000 Flybuys points, receiving 870 Velocity Points in return. Now members will be able to receive 500 Velocity Points for every 1,000 Flybuys points transferred – giving members more Points to redeem on Virgin Australia flights.

I wonder if they realised everyone just waited for the 15% promo periods to do transfers and decided to make it standard? WWR do 2:1 transfers to QF as standard, so maybe there's a bit of that too?

Chances of that resuming would be very minimal under Bain.

Yep I was being tongue in cheek albeit it would encourage me to drive to focus on earning VFF points again, which I feel little inclination to do any more - somehow Bain would have to calculate an uptick in VFF points transferred from banks if they reopened VA-KFF to offset loss of $ to KFF to make it worthwhile

The promotions usually come in April or May, and October / November. I will wait to set up the auto-transfer function until after April. If they continue to offer 15%+ transfer bonuses on Flybuys, I won't set it up at all.

I will also wait until May to see what happens. I'm in no rush to transfer as have a decent stash of Virgin points for a few domestic flights. I have a little less than half a million FB points waiting to go somewhere.

I have 130k Flybuys. I see no urgent need to transfer them. The exchange rate is not going to change any time soon, but the redemption possibilities for Velocity points may go up or down. At the moment, there's still the (slim) hope that they could once again be used for international travel on other airlines. Whether that is the same arrangement or a new arrangement could improve the value of Velocity for me. Conversely, the longer the redemption possibilities remain restricted to domestic routes to places I don't want to go, with a rather spartan flight experience, the less value I will attach to Velocity points.
