Further to my recent question on this i have had another thought. Could i fly to LA on Qantas then take a flight on AA to NY.After driving down to Florida take a AA flight to Hawaii then Jetstar to Sydney. But am i able to buy AA tickets here saving money on taxes and maybe tickets. Or should i stop mucking around and use all the points i have 128000 on a return ticket for one and just buy another for my wife. If so would it be better to ring FF and have them arrange it seeing there is so many flights Thanking you in anticipation

I can't remember which class you were going, but if economy I'd use the points for two one ways which you can book online saving a couple of thousand points, then pay for hte rest.

Purchasing tickets via AA will not necessarily be cheaper than purchasing through Qantas. The savings on taxes etc are when redeeming AAdvantage miles for an FF award ticket when compared with using QFF point for the redemption. If you only have QFF points in the bank then you need to redeem via QF.

If purchasing one fare with $$$ and one using QFF points, then you may want to consider making the redemption ticket in your Wife's name and purchasing your own so you are earning more points and status credits for your FF account.

My suggestion is to design your trip based on where you want to go and when you want to be there, then look at the options for obtaining the flights. Nobody else can make that decision for you as well put different values on redeeming points verses paying cash for flights. Some people have more points than cash and other have more cash to spare than points, so their "value" differs.
