Flights to London under $500 | The Australian

CUT-price airline AirAsia X has announced fares from Australia to Europe for as little as $453 one-way.
The Malaysia-based airline said on Tuesday it would begin flying between Kuala Lumpur (KL) and London from March next year.

The fares between the Kuala Lumpur International Airport's Low Cost Carrier Terminal and London's Stansted Airport start at $261 for an economy seat and $1280 for an XL (extra large) seat.

That is really cheap, although from the look of pictures I have seen it would also be quite cramped in a standard seat.

Would be interested to see pictures/stats for the XL seats as if they are similar to a Prem Y seat on other airlines that is a good deal.

If they offer a good range of meals that can be preordered it could be better than flying a legacy carrier.

AirAsia X don't have a galley as such. Anything that you can eat onboard has to either microwaved or heated up with hot water. Most of the food is basic, except for some of the asian options.

On my KUL-OOL, food options ran out about half way there.

The price could never be cheap enough for me to endure a LCC long haul.

I'm sure for the right market it's excellent, but price will never come before comfort for myself as i'm sure it wouldn't for many on the forum.

Oh, that sounds coughpy. Although apparently London flights will use an A340 so maybe things will be different.

I would consider using them but only if the seating, catering options and pricing made it worth the inconvenient aspects such as departing from OOL and using the LCCT in KUL and no FF points.

LCCs suit some people but they are not for everyone. I am quite happy to sit in an economy seat on a long haul flight on a full service carrier where food is provided, the alcohol flows freely, complimentary IFE and reasonable baggage allowance including the transport of golf equipment. On a LCC I would have to individually include all these options and all of a sudden the low cost airfare is more than a full service carrier.

Not sure how Air Asia Xs low cost model will be affected on the return flights from London when the proposed airport passenger duty from the UK increases to over A$400 in 2010....

I fly to London a couple of times a year and although my loyalty lies normally with BA & QF, there were no Classic QFF seats for the London - SYD leg of my trip next year.

So I gave myself a challenge of getting back as cheaply as I can. It's a hobby of mine sometimes. I've managed to get $32 SYD-coughet, $137 SYD-Japan, 1c SYD-Albury, $19.95 MEL-Perth, $19.95 MEL-Darwin, 1p London-Dublin etc etc etc)

So, I got an Air Asia X bargain. At the beginning of November, they had a birthday sale which was a FREE flight ($0) KUL - Australia so I booked mine to OOL + tax & charges which worked out at $208.99

I was waiting for the launch of the London to KUL to complete my missing link which happened last week. The acutal flight was GBP 41.00 + tax (total GBP 99) and then added on an exit seat for extra leg room (GBP 20), Meal (GBP 7) and 25kg bag check (GBP 20). So a total of GBP 146.00. This translated to $349.01 on my credit card.

So $558 from London to OOL is not a bad deal. I understand it could be as costly as a full-serve carrier but with this one, I was lucky.

And gives me a chance to overnight in KUL to see a bit of the city. KUL is one of the only Asian capitals I've not seen.

Now all I've got to worry about is OOL-SYD !

Just wanted to share that with you.

I'm committed to making this the cheapest possible. I might walk back OOL-SYD.

I'm sure I will be sitting there on AAX thinking about previous trips spent in a bed on BA Business, but what the hell !

Have you also considered the flight timings? Do you need accommodation at KUL and/or OOL on the way back?

yes, it means overnighting in OOL but luckily I have a friend who lives on the Gold Coast. Can catch up with her briefly, surely I'll be ready for a few beers after coming off the D7 !

And in KL it's a good use of those old SPG points which I used to collect before putting all hotel stays on QFF.

Hopefully will all work out perfectly. Travelling alone on the return flight anyway so can put up with anything. Will let you know how it goes !
