My annual work trip to the USA is usually in August, so I have always managed to find a Y+ sale fare, and have always successfully upgraded to J using points.

This year's trip however is in July, and I am starting to accept that there aren't going to be any Y+ sale fares and I am going to have a book a Y ticket.:(

My own observations SYD - LAX have been that the 747 flights seem to offer a better chance of upgrades (or award flights for that matter) than the A380, but LAX - SYD QF12 has always seemed to have a light load in J on any weeknight.

I am looking at SYD - LAX on wednesday 3/7 returning Thursday 11/7

I don't do this route often, so I'm sure others will have clearer ideas of which days / flights from the East coast to LAX and return consistently offer the best upgrade opportunities in a general sense. Doesn't have to be leaving from SYD if it means the difference between Y and J.

Maybe I'be been really lucky, but all my point upgrades went through for my last 3 trips to the US from Y or Y+ to J on QF 93/94 and 107/108. Outbound Sat, Tuesday and Thursday, inbound Monday, Sunday (x2). August and September. I did not see a clear pattern, but in August some J seats were empty on qf94.
