I am going to New Zealand for the first time next week, and I was wondering if there were any forms I have to fill out prior to leaving or anything that I have to do before I leave.

Assuming you’re an Australian citizen, there’s no need for a visa or anything, just remember to bring your passport ;) You’ll need to fill out a landing card on the plane, unless you have a chipped passport, and then it’ll work just like it does in Australia I believe (I don’t have a chipped passport myself).

OK thanks.

On my return flight, which is next Friday, I am traveling on flight Aerolineas Argentinas AR1182 from SYD-AKL. It is scheduled to arrive into SYD at 11:30AM.

I am then catching Jetstar JQ35 from SYD-MEL (International Terminal), this is scheduled to leave SYD at 15:15.

Is this enough time to go through customs and check in to the Jetstar flight?

Sorry if these seem like stupid questions

That is plenty of time assuming AR1182 is not more than about 2 hours late.

How long will customs take on SYD?
Nothing to do. As you are departing SYD in the international terminal you stay air side. Look for the transit signs. All customs & immigration will be in Melbourne

But I have to check in for the Jetstar flight. And if I had time, would like to go the observation deck.

Or do I have do the immigration in MEL?

Will you have bags checked-in?

If not I believe you can stay airside and transit, but if you have bags you’ll have to collect them and re-check-in.

Though I’m not entirely sure if you can online check-in for a JQi flight. Someone here should know.

I will have bags.

Then you’ll need to clear immigration, collect bags, clear customs and re-check-in not more than 3 hours before departure, but assuming you don’t have any major delays as mentioned above, you should have no trouble.

Do try get to the JQ counters early, as unless you’re flying StarClass there’s no priority line and it’s boring stood in it ;)

 I still have to (well, I still do at least - perhaps I've been doing something unnecessarily ) fill in a card when I go to NZ (and back into Oz for that matter) despite having a chipped passport. The chipped passport enables me to bypass human beings at immigration (when it works ) but card still required for quarantine and customs.

If the OP has a chipped Australian passport then he/she can definitely employ Smartgate for entering both countries. And it's possible when returning from AKL to Australia to perform Step 1 of the Australian entry process at AKL airport. There is one machine just outside the QP and another somewhere else in the airport.

Agreed.

There is still paperwork to do even with a chipped passport.

Ahh, apologies. I don’t have one, and wont till I need to renew in 2015 ;)

I had assumed you did the customs questions on the machine and it printed out a form with it all filled in.

It would be very handy to be able to pre-answer the standard set of questions and have those answers set as a default so when you used the machine you could have the option of choosing your default answers and having the machine print them for you. You'd still have to sign off on them so couldn't claim ignorance. And if you had to use a non-default answer then back to a manual system.

In fact, no manual required, just the option to alter one more of your default answers at the machine.

I’d imagine if they could do this, the reason they wont is because people would claim ignorance. Again, let down by the few, even though the majority is honest ;)
