Hi,

I'm not a rockstar like most of you folks, so this is only my first time in J on SQ (well, I flew once a very long time ago - I'm new to the points game). My wife and I are flying MEL-SIN-MNL with the MEL-SIN leg at 0105 on the A380. Couldn't get suites unfortunately (unless they open up in the week prior to travel?). Just wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks to ensure we maximise the experience. We've booked the cook - I chose the beef in green peppercorn and then the nonya nasi Padang - any good? Any recommendations for lounges in SIN as we have a number of hours there...

Anyway, thanks - hopefully it's a fun trip :)

Cheers

We were all new once to the points game and let me tell you this game is fun but highly addictive ;) Hopefully you play it correctly and get to experience many more flights in J/F for a fraction of the cost.

Regarding your SQ J flights I'll leave the suggestions to SQ frequent flyers and there are quite a few here but since you've mentioned BTC, the lobster is good :)

Thanks - I stuffed up this trip unfortunately (learning experience) as we've only got J on the outbound leg, but I'm learning. I've picked up 600K points in a year, which is pretty good - the challenge is time off work and putting up with the unending teasing since my new hobby is all I talk about.

Appreciate the tip on the lobster - I'm tempted, even though I really don't like shellfish/seafood (fish is okay)...I thought perhaps I should try something Singaporean or something so I'm still debating the steak...

Is there anything that I need to ask for (amenities kit, etc.?). Do they offer fancy bubbles or is that only in F/Suites?

If they're still doing the Nz lamb (Think it was lamb) that was divine! Lobster - didn't find much to it and a bit tough - an off day maybe.
Amenities were pretty much in the bathroom.

600K points is outstanding!!

600K MR or KF points? In any case that's impressive!
Are you flying Y on the inbound? Even if you couldn't find seats on SQ there are other options ex-MNL. The beauty of award bookings is one way tickets where you can mix and match all kinds of airlines. Personally I almost never use same airlines on the outbound and inbound (on Int), makes the journey more interesting :)

I wouldn't eat something you don't love just because everyone else does. Pick whatever appeals to you the most. Keep in mind that you should still be able to change your mind and pick something off the menu on the day.

Shame about the 1am departure time, I would have a cognac and then go straight to sleep myself!

Would OP get PJs for this flight? If not, pack something comfy to change into to sleep.

For amenities, nothing exciting because in the toilets they provide toothbrush/paste, shavers ect - my husband likes to steal the toothbrushes, I try to stop him but he needs supervision.

Enjoy! Im not into the food and booze but I enjoy the space and being able to sleep. The cabin environment is much calmer and peaceful.

calgarychris we just cannot have you wearing PJs from some second tier carrier like QF or EK - I will get you appropriately attired in SQ F PJs - or 'Sleeper Suits' as us more refined pointy end pax know them.

I have a dozen sets here ranging from S to XL - pm me your sizes and address details and I will send you a couple sets in mail. Only proviso is that I usually take these 'Sleeper Suits' to local Salvos store where they sell them for $10/set - I would still like to see the Salvos get a buck or 2 to help others so next time you see a Salvos collection tin drop $20 in there and the world will be a better place.

.

OP. Please take up this offer! You gotta wear PJs on during your flight :)

Edit: My husband use to be shy about wearing PJs but now he understand the comfort they give to relaxing. Hes going to wear QF on a Delta flight because Delta doesnt hand them out on the 10hr flight we're taking. Boo, Delta.

calgarychris, I don't know which SQ flights you are using between SIN - MNL and back but when I travelled more than a year ago, the B773 used on the MNL - SIN leg was in far better condition than what I was in from SIN to MEL.

Thanks so much guys for all the tips and tricks so far! Thanks CE for the offer of PJs, PM sent! :). Photos and donation to follow!

We're going MEL-SIN-MNL one way, then onward from MNL-GUM-TKK, then TKK-GUM-ROR and then returning ROR-MNL-SYD-MEL. A bit of a hike. I stressed when I was booking it and for the life of me, I cannot figure out why I didn't just book SQ return. That's the learning bit. We're flying UA on the middle bits and QF return, all in economy (with an upgrade request, but not much hope of that). Next time I'd probably just buy UA points and book via TG/UA but you live and learn.

Still, super excited to be going - booked the Singapore Heritage tour this arvo and will be looking at Priority Pass, SQ and Veloce for lounges in these places...

IMG_0046.JPGHello,
my husband and I just returned from a SQ flight and happened to eat the peppercorn beef - which my husband took a photo of. It was so delicious as was all their food- I don't think you can go too wrong TBH.
FYI we had the best time flying J with these guys...they have a great coughtail list which we hit as soon as boarded and incredible service. Enjoy!

Awesome, thanks! A photo's worth a thousand words! Looks pretty good, I suspect I will be trying that along with a few of the coughtails (is it SQ that has the crazy expensive cognac or is that Emirates?)...

Also, for the SQ experts, is there a chance of suites opening up on the flight? I've been looking and while I can see SQ218 has space now, the connecting flight doesn't even come up and I don't want to screw up my booking this close in. Also, any idea how long Amex MR points take to get to SQ, as it might be a moot point anyway...

Thanks

Just arrived back in MEL this morning after flying J on the SQ A359 from JNB - SIN and 777-300 from SIN - MEL.
Great service and in flight meals but both planes had the same J seats and boy were they a disappointment. We normally fly on OW carriers and haven't flown SQ for many years. I'm sure we won't be flying SQ for many to come given the premium price we paid not to be able to sleep.
Even Mrs V hated the seats even though at 5'7" she's way shorter than me.
For those who don't know them, you can only extend the seats a relatively small amount in the seated position before your feet get jammed against the seat in front - an impossible position to get comfortable to watch a movie.

To stretch out significantly you have to fold down the seat back (from the fully upright position) and poke your feet into a tunnel to one side. (Now I know plenty of J seats have a similar tunnel for your feet but usually they are at least aligned in more or less a straight line with your body rather than having to align yourself diagonally). These SQ seats seem to have been designed for people around 5'2" tall.
The seat backs you sleep on are hard, even if you pad them with the blanket they provide. There's no built-in padding or even a thin mattress provided. They provide a cushion (too thick to comfortably use as a pillow) and a pillow which is way too thin to support your head comfortably.

I wasn't expecting much of the SAA J on our way to JNB but we were pleasantly surprised - even Master V at 6'5" had stacks of room (and comfort).
Pretty sure I read that SQ had refurbed their J seats recently - if that's correct they get a massive fail from us for compromising comfort to squeeze in more seats.

The only issue with SQ218 is that it is a midnight flight, and arrives at SIN before 6am. So for most people they would just spend all that time sleeping, then waking up at last hour to have breakfast before landing. It is almost a waste of the Suites. So at the moment I have SQ218 booked in J and will probably keep it that way.

I know...Mrs Calgarychris insisted that getting a good night's sleep is the way to go. Pshaw! That's what our transit hotel is for - bring on the Dom! Anyway, happy wife, happy life...I'm more after the experience than anything else, but it doesn't look like Saver is available, so it's a moot point I guess.
