Thank you everybody for the wishes. Making me excited and thinking of how to have a better plan of "attack" for the coming year. Stumbled on AFF only in Feb 14. SC earn was mainly from Jetstar bundle (BNE-NTL twice a month). In fact, for the first half of the year, never added any bundle and SC was earned haphazardly.
Initially was mainly intend on collecting QFF points via multiple credit cards and targetting the 280k for Qantas "RTW". Currently sitting on 480k points but don't look like will be able to use it as I cannot plan 11 months ahead to book those coveted J class tickets.

Anyhow, will be posted to Malaysia in March, coinciding with resetting of SCs. Mainly based in KL but will likely travel to Penang, Kota Kinabalu and hoping to explore South East Asia and HK/Taiwan. Would it be better to try earning Qantas SC via MH, 3K, CX or aim for status in MH? I certainly like MH redemptions and find they have lots of availability.
Also tempted to use Citibank Signature exclusively, forking up the foreign transaction fee but maybe the 4 points/$1 earned will be worth it?

Once again, thank you AFF community. Wishing everybody an accelerated path to higher status !

Others will bite me, but I would book with 3K/JQ on the Jetstar website, and pay to put in a plus bundle, earn you a guaranteed 800 QF FF points and 10 QF SCs for even the shortest trip.
If you go to the QF points calculation website, and play around, you can/will see that QF earn on MH flights is quite small. Some routes where there are no JQ, then go MH.
You could also join AA's Big Shot program.
I have booked several flights with JQ on the JQ website, and pay plus bundle.
Wouldn't play around with booking JQ flights on the QF website.
Edit: flying MH from KUL to SIN, as a QF FF you earn 207 QF FF points and 10 QF SCs.
Flying 3K or QF (QF within Asia as a single flight-impossible to find), you earn 800 QF FF points and 10 QF SCs.
Joining AA's Big Shot program, you earn 1 point per RM/Myr2.

Only when booking in the most expensive economy fare bucket. Most economy promo fares that MH sells between the two cities book into O class, which is ineligible for points and status credits accrual in QF.

I am hoping my first job at one of the Big 4 professional services firms will yield some travel
(slightly OT but oh well)

Be careful what you wish for. I am in the same industry but (the grass is always greener..) on the other side of the fence in a commercial/ASX top 50 with a lot of friends in Big4

Make sure you make it clear you are ready and willing to travel, you won't be put on the jobs with travel good travel unless you say you're keen and also you'll have to go to some crummy locations as well. Take the good with the bad.

I have landed a gig that involves a lot of travel, a number of great destinations and the sudden onset of status, and I love it! However, I have had Big4 friends who have never been further than the Sunshine coast, or others have spent more time than they want to in Mining towns. Having said that, another one of them went to Fiji as a 2-week-old grad and I know others that do our audit that go to the US. I really hope you win the Big4 travel Lottery!

It has certainly changed the way I look at holidays!

I think this we all learnt that pretty quickly! If you ever find yourself in a great location remember to tack on a weekend or fly your girl/boy/toy-friend in for an add-on.

Above all else have fun in the industry and don't let it break your sole like it has so many others :)

As for me, I'm only 23 and now a serious status cough.... heh heh heh.

Also, Congrats mranwa!

Would you say its better then to concentrate on Enrich status, bearing in mind the lowest MH fare O class which does not give miles? If somehow managed to get silver (or dare I dream, Gold) that would be OneWorld status with some benefit when I am back in Australia. Having said that, I thought I've read somewhere about QFF status runs from KUL though not as good as within USA.

I joined Airasia Big Shot a while back, don't have much points. Not sure how good is their redemption for seats.

Wonder is there a AFF equivalent in Malaysia / South East Asia (MYFF? SEAFF?) ?

Hoping this isn't against the forum policies to mention another forum, but you may want to have a gander at flyertalk.com for a more global view of mileage programs.

Flights booked in O class will earn 50% miles in Enrich. To qualify for Enrich Silver (= oneworld Ruby) you need to earn 25,000 miles or 30 sector credits within a calendar year. How much travel do you think you will be doing and in what class?

Yes, meant AK in IATA sense of short form, AA being in the English short form.
OR subset being D7 in IATA.

ah yes, see even I made a slight error in I was actually looking for the IATA code myself. AK didn't look right to me either. Yes, D7.

Anyway the point was to avoid confusion (though I guess my own slight error compounded it :( ) given that American Airlines (AA) is a oneworld partner to QF. When I initially read your post I was confused and thinking you meant American until I quick gooogle revealed that the Big Shot program was part of AirAsia, and it made more sense within the context of discussing Malaysian options, but perhaps not that relevant to a QF flyer (as D7 is not a partner)

Oh 50% earnings, didn't realised that. Thanks for pointing it out.

Was just searching distance between KUL-PEN and KUL-BKI, 200 miles and 1000 miles respectively. That means I have to fly KUL-PEN return 62.5x in a year or KUL-BKI return 12.5x ......seems impossible to achieve. Though what is elite sectors? I assume sector credits means each flights, so 30 flights would do it for silver? Enrich T&C defined Elite Sectors as "An Elite Sector is a flight from origin to destination which carries a single flight number."

I think I might be traveling once or twice a month. So Silver might be achievable by flying a few extra flights for holiday.

That's right, sector credits = Elite Sectors. A flight in economy class will earn one Elite Sector and the same flight in business will earn two. So travelling in business will halve the number of flights needed to attain Silver. You also accrue miles at 150%.

I imagine short haul flights in J ex-MY are probably relatively cheap too....

Domestic MH J fares are quite affordable and are rather cheap when on sale. KUL-BKI in J will get you 60 QF status credits. You should be Gold in no time and can start using MH lounges.

I was 42 when i first achieved status, actually I had never concerned myself with it at all even though I flew with some regularity. Actually a HR manager always said (with a degree of arrogance I thought) that "I will only fly Qantas". I just thought he had his head in his backside. Our company at the time just booked whichever the cheapest ( I was a state operations manager at the time).
I came across this website by accident, read the posts, and can say I was almost instantly hooked. I think now it was actually me with the head in the backside.
Anyways I enjoy being QFF Gold, I mostly fly Qantas, and I hope to achieve WP this year on my way to LTS then LTG.
Well done mranwa, happy travels.

Just on the elite age thing this is interesting. I am a relative youngster (but still very old compared to some in this game)... I first achieved status way back when (90's) at the age of 25 (Silver, or at the time just called Premier, with United). I was then comp'd the next tier up, then known as Premier Executive by some sales and marketing types (long story there but basically involving the first flight of the then brand new 777) and I was hooked. I first made equivalent of Plat status (United 1K) when I was 30. Had that (then the highest status) for a few years, then for personal reasons dropped right off. Domestically I was an AN guy (RIP) until 2001, and did very little with QF until post that time, but not seriously until about 10 years ago. I think I only really made decent status around 2011 (Silver/Gold) then WP and finally WP1 an am close to LTG.

gee i'm a bit tired just typing all that! :D

For the first time in my life, today finally achieve status in any airline - Silver !
Nothing much I know for most AFF members here with Gold and Platinum and LTG, but I do look forward to the new priority boarding and maybe, just maybe a chance of upgrade one day.

I still have probably 80 SC coming along from now till 28 Feb (my reset date). What will happen to these SC? Get wiped out or will it start counting towards the 250 SC needed to requal silver? If it gets wipe out, then looks like better to fly other airline or not pay for the jetstar plus bundle till 1 Mar?

May the upgrade odds be ever in your favour!

Welcome to the status club ;)
