I've just got back from my first trip on South African Airways since the benefits for Velocity members were announced. I booked the trip a couple of months ago and was hoping that the benefits would be available before I travelled and luckily enough they were. Here's a few thoughts on my experience:

Check-in and Baggage: The travel agent booked this with the Melbourne to Perth leg on a VA flight number and booking and the Johannesburg and Antananarivo segments with SA flight numbers and bookings. Check in at the domestic terminal in Melbourne was very simple and the bags were checked through to my final destination without issue with priority tags. My bag turned up as one of the first on the belt in Antananarivo, so I was very happy with that. The return was a similar story, although I didn't get priority tags as my first flight was operated by Airlink.

Seating: Before the benefits were announced, I had already entered my United Platinum details, which I think managed to get me some good seats allocated. I'm not sure whether preferential seating is available as Velocity Gold/Platinum. That said, both flights to and from Johannesburg were pretty empty and there was no issue getting a bit of space in either direction. On the return leg, I noticed using Expert Flyer that there were a few free rows towards the back of the plane and managed to snag myself 4 seats to lie down in :)

Lounge Access: This is where things get a little tricky. Lounge access is only available where South African own the lounge and you're travelling on a flight operated by South African themselves. In Perth, they contract the lounge from Qantas as such access was not available to Velocity Gold/Platinum members. Fortunately, I also had my United Platinum card with me and they allowed me in with that (they wanted to change the FF number on the booking, but when I explained that I wanted the points to credit to Virgin for the flight, they were ok with letting me in and making a note of my United number). I had a similar issue in Johannesburg as the flight to Antananarivo was operated by Airlink, not South African, but when they asked how long I had until my next flight (4.5 hours), they kindly allowed me in without further issue. The return was much more simple, there is no available lounge in Antananarivo, but I was able to access the South African lounge in Johannesburg, then the Virgin lounge in Perth without issue (as expected).

Points & Status Credits: The points and SCs from my outbound flights credited today - 10 days after flying. I received credit for both the Johannesburg flight and also the Airlink flight (presumably as it was a SA flight number). The flight was discount economy, so I received 50% of the miles for the journey. I then received the same again as a bonus. At this point, I'm not sure if that was because I'm platinum with Virgin or whether it was from the 100% bonus promotion that I signed up for.

Overall, I was pretty happy with the experience. I know there was at least one Velocity member who was disappointed about not having lounge access in Perth (as the people at the desk were discussing it), so that would be good to resolve, but other than that, the benefits seem to work pretty well.

jcb12, thank you for the real-life experience. It is this sort of no-bullsh_t info I love to get here.

Thanks for taking the time to share :)

I recently flew SAA business to Cape Town from Perth on SA flight number.

Got 29,824 points and 440 status credits! Very nice. Business was full from Perth and approx half full return (both mid-week). Flight JNB-CPT packed.

Lounge in JNB pleasant enough - no RSA there I can tell you. Very decent hand pours!

All in all I think it's a very good move for Virgin.

Proves again the importance of Star Gold status. I would use Velocity more exclusively if VA were in *A.

Flew business class JNB to CPT this evening. Tried to add my velocity number when I checked in, as originally Qantas had put me on the South African flight.

Not only did it not work, and the agent not know anything about the partnership, but she'd never heard of Virgin Australia. Not helped by the problem mentioned elsewhere that the card looks like a credit card and doesn't identify the airline anywhere on it. Hopefully I can do a retro claim. Am getting tired of constantly having to do that with Virgin.

You are too kind! That shouldn't even need resolving (because it should never have been a problem) - someone in Brisbane needs to be sacked right now, tonight, no excuses.

"No departure terminal lounge access for - a VA status passenger, departing Australia in Y on a partner airline's flight" is quite simply an end of employment termination offence for whoever signed off on that IMO, or VA needs to get out of the airline partnership/alliance business.

VA needs to get out of the airline partnership/alliance business.

Now there's a revelation.......I never realised they actually ever genuinely got into it! ;)

Currently in the South African Airways lounge at CPT. Virgin Australia denied at check in, not possible to add VFF number to the booking. And I was an idiot, becuase VA isn't a Star Alliance member. However at the lounge I was able to do it because, I was told, VA has just recently joined Star Alliance...

VA has just recently joined Star Alliance...

I wish that comment was on the money! Shame it's more likely just another who simply doesn't understand a cobbled together partnership.

It's only the beginning of the relationship. Takes time..
When I wrote my bit just above, I actually stopped to think the same thing.....ie, what's the difference really between a cobbled together partnership and an alliance? The answer I gave myself was that during the "takes time" phase, the pax are the ones that suffer. At least an alliance has had most of the teething issues resolved some time ago. In my experience, the cobbled together partnership seems to be little more than lip service (in SQs case at least).

Just thought I'd share my recent experience trying to link my Velocity account to two South African Airways bookings. When checking in online, Virgin Australia does not even appear on the list of frequent flyer programs (though Qantas still does)... that website could probably use an update.

My first flight departed from a small regional airport in South Africa. Was told that linking my Velocity account was not possible. I will try to do a retrospective claim - when the Velocity website lets me in 14 days.

My second experience in Johannesburg was much better. Just gave the agent my Velocity card and he linked my account. Easy.

Can't comment on status recognition as I have no status with Virgin anyway.

So, three weeks later and no points or SCs have been credited to my Velocity account for either flight. They should have credited automatically for my JNB-LVI sector as my VA number was attached to the booking, but apparently that didn't make a difference. I put in missing points claims for both flights a week ago, and was told points would post within 72 hours. They didn't.

Any ideas on what to do now? Should I just keep waiting patiently?

Call Velocity and see what to do, they might tell you to email through your boarding passes so they can manually credit the flights - Maybe tweeting or posting to Velocity on here will get you some where

A very generous 108 points :( have credited for my recent HDS > JNB flight on my VS flying club account.

I suspect if you haven't received your points this may have something to do with VA as they are still a new partner to SAA.

Wow... Maybe it's not even worth the effort then.

I'd just put in another claim.
