CHINA'S state broadcaster has apologised for a fire that destroyed a new luxury hotel.

Pyrotechnics set off to celebrate the end of the Lunar New Year were to blame for the fire, Luo Yuan, a spokesman for the Beijing fire department, told the Xinhua News Agency.

Glad no-one was injured. It's no great loss - the building was an eyesore.
