It has just come to my attention that long-haul AY J passengers can pre-order meals: Pre-order meals | During the flight | Information and services | Finnair - Hong Kong

There are apparently three thematic options:

Wellness and Energy
"The healthy Wellness and Energy options are made with fresh, natural ingredients. This healthy, tasty option often incorporates Asian flavours and ingredients."

Food Lover's Treat

"If you’d like to sample bratwurst or hearty stews, then Food Lover’s Treat is for you. This option is satisfying and full of flavour – a true treat."

Chef's Gourmet

Chef’s Gourmet meals will satisfy even the most discerning of foodies. With this option, you can enjoy carefully crafted meals, centred on such delicacies as succulent reindeer tenderloin.

This page (Intercontinental flights in Business Class | During the flight | Information and services | Finnair - Hong Kong) says it only applies to flights departing HEL, but it comes up in the drop-down menu on the SIN-HEL booking I have. Perhaps that's just an oversight.

The currently listed options are:

Current menu: grilled chilli marinated prawns with cashew nuts, jasmine rice and fresh vegetables.
Current menu: herb seasoned bratwurst sausages, roasted potatoes and onions with fresh tomatoes.
Current menu: roasted fillet of reindeer with ale-cranberry sauce, potato gratin and grilled vegetables.

Anyone tried this feature of AY J out?

I used the pre-order service for my HEL-HKG flight in July and it worked well - from memory, one of the flight attendants went up and down the aisle checking pre-orders before the meal service, and I got my meal pretty quickly (probably because I was seated in 2A).

I got the reindeer and while I liked it (I grew up in Finnair's part of the world), it's probably not the ideal introduction to eating Rudolf - it's quite a large chunk of meat they serve, and it's indeed quite lean and gamey as suggested by Sprucegoose, and a little dry.

Out of HEL we've done it +12 times. Works well. We always run with Rudolph as it just seems so fitting and yum.
For non HEL originating flights we still select from the menu like QF to ensure we get what we want.
Always works a treat. The staff will typically confirm our selection when on-board.

FWIW, I did try Reindeer in Helsinki. I'd say it was fantastic. Not too gamey at all, you could easily eat it daily as a substitute for any red meat.

Never tried reindeer. I am sure it would be lean and gamey. Good one AY

Finland has one of the highest rates of coronary artery disease in the world, probably as a result of their consumption of reindeer meat.
The prawns sound good...
