Fiji or bali holiday with one year old

The Fijians absolutely dote on kids especially toddlers. To me a no brainer.

A vote for Bali from me. We have been there with our son twice in the last 12 months. He was 1.5 yrs and 2 years (we went about 6 months apart).

I think you can probably find something suitable for you at either location. There is plenty of good hotels/resorts to choose from. So it may depend upon flight timings and price?

I have done both with young kids and i would pick Fiji over Bali.

Firstly the flights... if you go VA 9.30 from Mel arrive in afternoon (perfect to check in), return is ~16:30 from Nadi better suited to a 1 year old. Most direct flight from Bali are overnight (JQ & GA) and leave late at night which is not ideal.

Staying at one of the resorts on Denarau island which is close to the main port with lost of great dining options, small supermarket to grab supplies, shops ect... The best bit though is there is a kids play center and child minding there which is perfect when you would like to have a relaxing dinner for a couple of hours!

Thank you all for your responses!!

A lot of insight.

Decided on Fiji for a few reasons:
- flight times - awesome point to raise
- wanted somewhere new, i've been to Bali a long time ag
- The Fijians love of kids, makes us feel more comfortable getting nanny / baby sitting services for a dinners etc.

Will update on which resort we choose but at the moment a 1BR suite at the Radisson is looking as the winner so bub can sleep in bedroom while the wife and I are in the TV area / balcony etc.

Enjoy! Your reasoning is all sound. The flight times back from Bali except for Perth are awful.

The Radisson is good. My daughter and I had a lot of fun on the water slide. I won't bother uploading the photo, but imagine a bottle of Bollinger in a Dora the Explorer bucket - that sums up the place for me =)

One thing to consider before you book either is whether you're planning on having a second child soon and any impact Zika may have... QLD may end up being a better option if this is the case.

That's a fair point. Zika reported in both Fiji and Bali. But appears more prevalent in Bali.

I haven't been to Fiji, but we're just back from an extended family holiday in Bali with a 3, 9 & 11 year old. We had a house in Seminyak (no pool fencing would not have been suitable for the 2 year old twins who stayed at home!)

All kids had Bali belly at some stage- that was a factor I hadn't through about. We were planning a 30th b'day in Bali next year, but because that will include younger kids, we're thinking Port Douglas might be a better option.

Bali Belly? Took our infant son to Hamilton Island in Qld. He was still on formula milk so we were boiling the water. Took him to the Hospital and Dr said it was just travel yada yada. Spoke to another mum in the waiting room. Her baby had same issue. Got back home and had to have him tested. Dr on the island ignored the issue.

Seems that boiling doesnt kill the giardia that was in the water supply. He became lactose intolerant as a result. And this was in the days before baby food catered for such issues.

Goodness, that's nasty :-(

Hey all

need some help

looking for a one week holiday for the wife and I with our 1 year old girl.

Happy to stay on property for 80% of time sitting by pool & close to room so baby can nap

I've been to bali, stayed in seminyak on a boys trip when younger, not sure i'd be very relaxed with a 1 year old there, but have heard nusa dua and other places have bigger & more kid friendly resorts.

Fiji looks great, places like intercontinental, shangri la, radisson etc all look very nice and big.

Have heard food prices are crazy, so will maybe look at a meal plan if possible.

What & where would you recommend?

Baby will still be napping 1-2 times a day so excursions etc are not really a likelihood for us, hence the resort itself will need to be spectacular so we really enjoy ourselves.

We're more than happy to sit by pool reading, playing with bub etc.

Also, concerned re return leg from Fiji to Mel being over 6 hours, so thinking buying Y tickets and upgrading to J via point redemption

Any advise you can provide will be appreciated.

Fiji. (extra words for post)

I think the risk is higher in Fiji, but still a risk in both. I was planning Fiji but changed to palm cove for this reason

Recent DFAT warnings suggest otherwise.
